Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore has undergone an extensive makeover and the hotel lobby looks contemporary and stylish. On the lobby level are two dining outlets – J65, an all-day dining restaurant that has a popular buffet spread, and Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go, a 24 hour cafe which offers gourmet coffee and light bites.
Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go is very attractively decorated. It opens up into the main hotel lobby but looks nothing like a typical hotel lounge. The cafe incorporates bicycles as well as a cycling track as part of the interior design; with bicycles being integral to the interior design of the new hotel lobby as well as free for hotel guests’ use to discover the city. With its chic furniture and lighting, Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go looks sleek and trendy. It is a nice comfortable space to sit and relax with a cup of coffee or to have a serious discussion over tea.
Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go offers juices, beers and wines, hot and cold dishes and snacks 24 hours a day. Sandwiches, salads, quiches, muffins, masala tea, local coffee and dirty milkshakes are available.
On its menu are also local dishes like char kway teow and chicken rice as well as pasta, burgers and steaks.
We were there for lunch and ordered a local laksa ($17), the club sandwich ($24) and a cappuccino ($6). All the prices stated on the menu are inclusive of GST and service charge.
You place your order and pay and the counter. The food and beverages will be served to your table. You can help yourself to water, napkins and condiments from the service station.
The serving portions were huge. It was another occasion when we wondered why hotels won’t serve smaller portions and charge less.
The club sandwich sat on top of a basketful of fries. The bread was nicely toasted and the filling which included ham, lettuce, tomato, egg and mayonnaise was of good quality and taste. The fries were thin and crispy.
The laksa was not presented in the most attractive manner. It came in a gigantic bowl and looked like just curry gravy. However, it tasted like authentic local stuff. The gravy was sufficiently lemak and delicious. Big prawns, eggs, fish cakes and other ingredients were all hidden in the bowl.
Overall, it was a good lunch at Jen’s Kitchen On-the-Go. The food items were good and so was the cappuccino. The service was befitting of a modern hip hotel. The place is very pleasant and comfortable. We think it is quite a wonderful spot to sit and linger and observe the comings and goings in the hotel lobby.
