Fresh Fruits Lab (FFL) is a cafe and bar along Changi Road, much nearer to Telok Kurau and Eunos than to Changi Beach or Changi Airport. Located in a shophouse at the junction of Changi Road and Lorong Marzuki, Fresh Fruits Lab is a neighbourhood cafe that serves the usual casual dining items like burgers, fish & chips, pastas and pizzas as well as a variety of fruit-inspired concoctions and fruit & floral beers. They have a weekend brunch menu on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between 10 am and 3 pm.
The interior design incorporates elements from the school science laboratory. The place is reasonably attractive but does not really stand out from the slew of indie cafes with similar fittings and furnishing. However, they do make clever use of science lab apparatus as props and for serving water and beverages.
There is an eclectic mix of casual furniture in the indoor air-conditioned area and wooden deck furniture in the walkway dining area outside.
They introduced a new menu in January this year. As the name of the cafe suggests, the menu of Fresh Fruits Lab (FFL) consists of many dishes which incorporate fruity elements and experimental creations. Below are a few pages from their weekend menu and regular menu.
We went for a weekend brunch at Fresh Fruits Lab and ordered a Frittata ($15) and Pork Jerky Fusion Pizza ($17). A cappuccino was $5. The usual service charge and GST would be added to the bill.
Fruit infused iced water was served together with complimentary fruit juices almost as soon as we were seated.
The young service crew was enthusiastic, friendly and efficient. The food was served very promptly and was attractively presented.
The Frittata was served with fruity salad, roasted tomatoes and toasted multigrain bun. The egg dish, with spinach, potatoes, shiitake mushrooms and tomatoes, was well made. It was moist, had with a good texture and was not spongy.
The Pork Jerky Fusion Pizza was like Hawaiian pizza but instead of ham you got pork floss and bak kwa. The thin pizza crust had a biscuit-like texture. On the whole the pizza was more sweet than savoury. We thought it was one of the few occasions where adding local ingredients to a traditional Western dish actually worked out very well. We enjoyed the delicious bak kwa pizza.
The cappuccino was served clean and neat – no fancy latte art – just a nice smooth cup of cappuccino.
Fresh Fruits Lab (FFL) has various promotions. During weekdays lunch time (11am to 2:30pm), FFL offers a set lunch menu at S$12++. The menu changes every fortnight. They have a 1-for-1 draft beer promotion from 11 am to 8 pm. Free wifi is available. FFL is within walking distance from Kemangan MRT station. Street parking is available along Changi Road, Lorong Marzuki and other side lanes nearby. There is also a small URA car park at Lorong Mydin.
We enjoyed our weekend brunch at Fresh Fruits Lab (FFL). It has a nice homely feel and slightly off beat charm. The service and food were good. We would certainly be returning to try other items on they have to offer.
