Montana Singapore Cafe is not located in a gentrified district; it is in a modern mall instead of a shop house that used to be a dispensary, a barber shop or a hardware store. The name is neither quirky nor unpronounceable. There is nothing unusual hanging from the ceiling and there is not a single bicycle or scooter to be found on the cafe premises. In other words, among the bevy of new trendy cafes in Singapore, Montana Singapore is a rather ordinary girl. But we like this ordinary girl.
Montana Brew Bar was a small coffee bar with limited seating on level 1 of PoMo in Selegie Road. In December last year, they moved into a bigger space up on level 2, launched a new menu and adopted a new logo – the name is now simply Montana.
The new Montana has a contemporary casual chic interior design. A large rug on the cement floor adds colour and warmth to the space. The baristas hold court at a long elegant bar back-lit by natural light. The place is open, bright and welcoming.
The food menu is limited – pasta, waffles and desserts – but the limited number of items are rather interesting. Montana has added some intriguing twists to traditional flavours – thus they have dishes such as Assam Crab Waffle inspired by Kedah Laksa and Black Velvet Waffles with a black sesame base. The drinks menu features the signature Coconut Cold Brew Coffee – apparently a world first.
We went there for brunch and ordered the Vodka Crab Penne ($18) and the Southern Fried Chicken Waffle ($14.50) together with a Regular Coconut Cold Brew ($6.80) and an Orange Carrot & Ginger Juice ($6).
The staff were pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. Iced water was served as of course. We were asked if we liked to have side plates so that we could share our food.
The drinks arrived within a few minutes after our orders were taken. The presentation of the Coconut Cold Brew was fascinating. In a glass was a ball of frozen coconut water. The espresso coffee came in a conical flask. We were told to pour a little of the coffee into the glass and sip. The taste was smooth and the flavour and sweetness of the coconut water were very slight but clearly discernible. We would order this again.
The Orange Carrot & Ginger Juice came in a large Mason jar – maybe enough beta carotene and vitamins for the whole weekend. It was nice and refreshing.
We did not have to wait long before the food was served. The Vodka Crab Penne did not look particularly exciting. However, it was well done. Vodka, cream and tomatoes sounded like an odd combination but the resulting sauce was fabulous. The crab meat added sweetness and texture to the sauce.
Rave reviews had been written about the waffles in Montana. Having tried their Southern Fried Chicken Waffle, we thought the accolades were well deserved. The waffle had a crispy, slightly flaky exterior and a light and soft inside. The waffle was enjoyable eaten on its own without anything else. It was definitely one of the best waffles we have had in a cafe. The fried chicken had a thin brown coating with meat that was tender and moist. Mixed with some tangy coleslaw and spicy sauce, the savoury waffle dish was really tasty and satisfying.
We will definitely be going to Montana Singapore more often.
Montana Singapore Cafe may look like a very ordinary modern cafe but in fact it is very good in all the right areas. It has a comfortable relaxed atmosphere, an interesting menu, great attentive but unobtrusive service, nice food presentation and good food at reasonable prices. Montana may not be the cafe equivalent of Ms Head-turner or Ms Edgy but it is definitely a good ordinary girl with all the right attributes – the type of ordinary girl to bring home to mom.
