Garcons French Grill is a new stall in AlibabaR Hawkers Bar in Katong. Garcons is a collaboration between Chef Enoch Teo (of Enoch’s European) and Chef Immanuel Tee (of Immanuel French Kitchen). Their first outlet Garcons@Essen at The Pinnacle has been popular. Their Garcons French Grill brings good affordable French food to Katong.
In a sense, Chef Enoch Teo has come back home. He operated Le Petit Paradis as a stall in AlibabaR Hawker Bar before setting up Le Petit Paradis as a restaurant at East Coast Road. The restaurant was rebranded as Enoch’s European. He closed Enoch’s to set up Garcons in the Pinnacle @ Duxton. He comes a full circle by opening a new Garcons outlet as a stall in AlibabaR Hawker Bar.
Garcons French Grill operates on a self service basis. You place your order and pay at the counter and will be given a buzzing device. You collect the food when you are buzzed. Utensils, sauces and napkins are on the counter.
Garcons’ menu features starters such as Scotch egg, escargot and foie gras. The Main courses include the signature duck leg confit, herb-crusted salmon, steak and pasta.
We ordered the miso carbonara spaghetti ($9.90) and the char-grilled pork chops ($13.50). The food was ready for collection within about 15 minutes. The food was nicely garnished and plated.
Garcons’ spaghetti alla carbonara got a Japanese twist by having a rich miso paste added to its creamy sauce – and the taste was like the usual spaghetti alla carbonara with miso added; not very interesting. We thought that the pasta dish was a case where fusion did not really work.
The more traditional char-grilled pork chops were excellent. Generous cuts of grilled pork drizzled with onion sauce sat on a bed of mashed potatoes. The pork was served with a large helping of delicious special coleslaw of purple cabbage and raisins. The pork had charred edges but with inside still tender and not dry. The meat was flavourful and had a definite smokey flavor.
Garcons French Grill has done an excellent job in making good restaurant-quality European food accessible to ordinary folks at affordable prices. Now we don’t have to dress up and brush up on French table etiquette to have a good French meal. We can just saunter over to AlibabaR in our flip-flops and eat at Garcons French Grill. We are glad that Garcons has made it possible for us to have cheap and good French food in Katong.
