Mezza9 Hyatt is a restaurant on the mezzanine level of the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Scotts Road Singapore. It created waves when it first opened many years ago (perhaps more than 15 years if my failing memory is not wrong). Somehow, because new and wonderful dining places have opened up in the meantime, there was no chance to revisit this quite unusual but fascinating restaurant. We were back recently and the place looked exactly the same as it was then. Yet still totally contemporary and not a feather out-of-place. Whoever it was that envisioned the concept and designed the restaurant ought to be complimented.
Mezza9 Hyatt is a large restaurant that integrates various kitchens and dining areas into one big open space. There were European and Chinese kitchen areas as well as Japanese cuisine preparation areas for yakitori and sushi. There could be other food stations that I cannot remember. The ventilation system must be top-notch. With all that heavy-duty cooking in open concept spaces, the air in Mezza9 remained clean and fresh.
With the varied cuisines available, one can have a field day selecting mix and match items from the ala carte menu. At lunch time, there are several lunch sets ranging from a $36 Thai curry set to a $64 deli seafood set. There is the option of ordering from the two or three course menus at $32 and $42 respectively.
At dinner time, there is a signature three course dinner ($79). Here is a picture of the dinner menu as well as the portions from the ala carte menu.
We selected the bento box ($44) and the yakitori ($36) set lunch. A small complimentary loaf of bread was served. The tomato based sauce was a very good dip to go with the bread.
The bento box contained a variety of Japanese food items – salad, cold udon, sashimi, grilled mackerel, some sticks of yakitori.
The yakitori set looked quite similar, except that there was rice instead of udon, more choices of yakitori and no grilled fish. We thought that these were competently prepared Japanese bento, but not outstanding. The salad was better than most that play a minor role in these bento offerings because of the seasoning and the fish eggs provided a layer of complexity to the taste.
What elevates the dining experience at Mezza9 Hyatt to a high level is a combination of the food, the atmosphere and the attentive service. Eating in a beautiful environment with the chefs at work providing the visual energy somehow made it so much more enjoyable than if we had been served the same food in a plain restaurant. After all these years, Mezza9 is still a classy place that draws in the crowds at lunch time. There are a couple of credit cards that quality for interesting discounts at Mezza9. As this may change from time to time, we suggest you check at the restaurant for the latest information.
