Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao 聚豪拉面小笼包 – new at Square 2, Novena

Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao 聚豪拉面小笼包 Novena

Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao 聚豪拉面小笼包 was a popular stall in Lavender Food Square serving Northern Chinese fare like La Mian, Xiao Long Bao and Fried Dumplings. It was one of those stalls in a food centre with an “open kitchen” where you could watch the chefs making fresh noodles and preparing the food. Lavender Food Square is closed but the good news is that Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao has set up shop somewhere more upscale. In collaboration with Ministry of Food (who is behind brands like My Izakaya, Lenas and Social Square), Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao 聚豪拉面小笼包 has opened a casual dining outlet in Square 2, Novena.

Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao 聚豪拉面小笼包 occupies a space carved out of the corridors and atrium on the ground level of Square 2 at Novena. The decor is fairly typical of many similar restaurants you find in malls catering for those wanting simple quick  meals – clean, efficient layout with a contemporary casual look.

The menu is fairly simple – they have their signature dumplings and zha jiang noodles as well as soups, vegetables, rice and noodles. You place your order using one of the chits found the table and handing it over to a staff.

We needed a quick meal and ordered Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles ($7.80), Pork Wanton Noodle Soup ($8.50) and Steamed Salted Egg Dumpling ($5.80++ for 5). GST and service charge would be added to the bill.

The food was served within a few minutes after the order was taken. The Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles came with thin springy noodles in a rich meaty sauce. It was a satisfying one dish meal.

The wanton noodles was a straightforward dish that was well prepared. The noodles had a nice texture and the wanton had very smooth slippery skins without any flour aftertaste. The clear thin broth had a nice flavour.

The Steamed Salted Egg Dumpling was Xiao Long Boa with salted egg yolk added. There was a little broth inside the dumpling. The pork tasted fresh and juicy. The salted egg yolk provided a good contrast to the slightly sweet seasoned minced pork. The dumpling skins were a little thick but overall we thought the dumplings were as enjoyable as those in the popular restaurants known for their Xiao Long Boas.

We enjoyed our simple meal at Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao 聚豪拉面小笼包. Service was prompt and efficient. The food was tasty and the portion was reasonably generous. We like Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao at Square 2, Novena – it is a simple unpretentious place where we can get quality dumplings and noodles in air-conditioned comfort at reasonable prices.
