Opened late 2015, Ash & Elm at InterContinental Singapore occupies the ground floor location where Olive Tree used to be. Whereas Olive Tree had a bright and breezy Mediterranean atmosphere, Ash & Elm has a trendy sombre decor with impressive chandeliers hanging down from its very high ceiling. This tall dark and handsome European restaurant exudes an air of charm and sophistication. If you are looking for a romantic restaurant right next to a MRT station, Ash & Elm will be a prime candidate.
Ash & Elm has a Charcuterie & Cheese Room, a Wood-Fired Oven, an Open-Grill Kitchen and an Open Dessert Studio where you can see the chefs practising their crafts. You can choose to sit at the counter where you will get the best view of the open kitchen or at tables tucked away in cosy dim corners.
Ash & Elm focus on European cuisine offering a selection of sharing plates, cured and premium meats, seafood, pasta and burger as well as a good range of cheese and desserts. The menu is one which will surely appeal to the carnivore. If you are a vegetarian there is the rather mundane slow-cooked organic seasonal vegetables; and there is always bread, though it must be said that the bread there is very good.
We ordered Crab Cakes ($24) and Black Angus Beef Tenderloin ($56). A complimentary basket of bread and bread-sticks was served together with a variety of butter. Water was also served.
The Crab Cakes were very good. The outside breaded layer was crispy and light. The tender, succulent crab meat encased within was tasty.
Black Angus Beef Tenderloin was beautifully presented with small pot of jus. The char-grilled beef was cooked just the way we liked. It was tender, with the inner parts having a buttery texture. The flavour was subtle and the light gravy complemented the meat nicely.
Having a meal in a nice restaurant like Ash & Elm can be quite an expensive affair but overall we enjoyed our experience there. The professional and friendly staff provided excellent service. They were knowledgeable and helpful. Being able to see the chefs in the open kitchen preparing the dishes that were served to us was an interesting experience. The dining space was luxurious without being intimating. The food was nicely presented and tasted good. This is one tall dark and handsome European we will gladly introduce our dates to.
