The Coffee Daily is a small little cafe tucked away in a row of shophouses that is a distance away from the central round-about area of Serangoon Garden. It is located along Brighton Crescent, which is at the edge of the Serangoon Garden estate, near Yio Chu Kang Road. It is a cafe which we had not been to in a long while. We dropped in to see if it anything has changed.
The front part of The Daily Coffee seemed little changed. The bar counter and shiny coffee machine take pride of place in the middle. It is the inner dining area that seemed to have shrunken in size. What has remained the same is the laid back, casual atmosphere. Old mismatched furniture seem to blend well with the very basic shop space. The retro terrazzo flooring that was so fashionable in the 70s provide a suitable backdrop for the furniture.
We only stopped by for coffee but could not resist getting a slice of their colourful rainbow cake. The coffees ($4.50 for long black and $5 for cappuccino) were very good. The rainbow cake ($8.90 each slice) was probably no different from any such cake elsewhere, but we are suckers for the beautiful presentation. The Somewhere Over The Rainbow lettering somehow made it that much more desirable. It was a large slice, enough to be shared by four people who should be on a diet.
Overall, visiting quaint cafes is always such an enjoyable experience. The food may not be that special, the furniture could be downright uncomfortable, but once the right balance in the atmosphere is achieved, the overall cafe experience is more than a sum of its parts. Our visit to The Coffee Daily was like that.
