Wang Jia Shan Jiao Bak Kut Teh

Bak Kut Teh seems to be climbing the popularity chart in Singapore. Many malls now have a restaurant or stall selling this meat dish cooked in herbal broth. Wang Jia Shan Jiao Bak Kut Teh (皇家山脚肉骨茶) just opened an outlet in Suntec City. It serves Teochew style bak kut teh with clear and peppery soup.

The Suntec City outlet of Wang Jia Shan Jiao Bak Kut Teh is located in the basement in a separate concession space of the Food Republic Food Court. The dining area is rather small and tables are placed close together. It is operated food court style.  There are menu boards on the wall and you order and pay at the counter.

Besides bat kut teh, it offers typical side dishes to go along with bak kut tek, including braised trotters, liver soup, braised bean curb and vegetables. Mee sua is available and so is you tiao. A basic bowl of bak kut teh is $6.50. The premium pork rib soup will cost $8.50.

I ordered their Bak Kut Teh Set ($10), which comprised a bowl of standard bak kut teh, a side dish and a drink. I chose the salted vegetables as the side and barley water for my drink.

Wang Jia Shan Jiao Bak Kut Teh soup was mild and not very peppery. It was tasty but lacked the kick we might have come to expect of the herbal spicy soup of bak kut teh. The pork ribs were chopped up into small pieces. They were well cooked and was flavourful and tender; the meat detached from the bones easily. There was no strong porky taste.

The salted vegetables, one of the staple side dishes, were well braised. It was not too salty and had a nice taste.

Overall, it was a nice simple bak kut teh meal in air-conditioned comfort. For city dining, the price is quite reasonable. Wang Jia Shan Jiao Bak Kut Teh will appeal to those who like their bak kut teh to be mild and not too spicy.
