Shepherd Cafe is a small neighbourhood cafe in Space @ Kovan along Yio Chu Kang Road. It is run by an earnest husband & wife team and it should not be too surprising that eating there is almost like having simple home-cooked food. No prize for guessing that Shepherd’s pie is on the menu of Shepherd Cafe .
Space @ Kovan is a mixed development with residential apartments and more than 50 commercial units. Many of the commercial units are still unoccupied. Shepherd Cafe on the road level of Space @ Kovan is one of the few businesses that have started operations there. In the evening, the cafe with its warm glow looks inviting in the rather quiet and dim precinct. Shepherd Cafe has a homely, laid-back atmosphere.
Shepherd Cafe serves all-day breakfast, waffles, salads, fries and a few mains. The signature item is the Shepherd’s pie – there is a beef version and a chicken version. Cakes and a range of tea, coffee, sodas and fruity freezes are available.
We went to Shepherd Cafe at Kovan for dinner and ordered a beef Shepherd’s Pie ($12.80), Teriyaki Chicken Burger ($11.80) and an iced lychee tea ($4.80). There is no GST or service charge. Iced water is available from a water station. The waiting time for the food was about 15 to 20 minutes.
The shepherd’s pie was served piping hot with salad on the side. The light salad dressing was rather delectable. The simple cottage pie with a thin layer of very smooth and fine mashed potatoes spread over the top was enjoyable. The savoury minced beef filling has a nice balanced taste and complemented the creamy mashed potatoes well.
The Teriyaki Chicken Burger was also served with a portion of salad and thin cut fries on the side. The piece of grilled chicken was big. The burger was too large to bite through even for someone with a big mouth. The marinated chicken was well grilled and had good salty and sweet flavours. The meat was tender. It is a burger dish that we would have again.
On the whole, neither the look of Shepherd Cafe at Kovan nor the food served there was exceptional. Homelike is the word that come to mind. However, that may be the selling proposition of Shepherd Cafe. It is not fancy and does not try to be hip or cute. It has a familiar and homey feel and the food is like what mum may serve – comfort food carefully prepared and quite palatable.
