According to the National Park’s website, the HortPark “…is a one-stop gardening resource centre that brings together gardening-related, recreational, educational, research and retail activities under one big canopy in a park setting”. We visited it recently, but the main reason was not gardening, but to eat at the Vineyard HortPark Restaurant.
The Vineyard HortPark Restaurant is a modern restaurant serving European cuisine. There is air-conditioned area and some alfresco areas. There are some wide open spaces outside, along the pond. But it is simply too hot to eat there in the day time. We can imagine that it would be a pleasant place for drinks or dining in the evenings. Here are pictures of some pages of the regular menu and brunch and set lunch menus.
Our lunch started with a tempura medley ($15). The strips of vegetables were deep fried, tempura style. The taste was light and good.
The beef bolognese grilled cheese sandwich ($14) from the brunch menu was a large portion, best shared by two. The grilled cheese combined with the beef bolognese to create a rich tasting sandwich.
The scallop and prawn linguine ($26) was quite ordinary. The pasta was overcooked and soft.
One can’t go far wrong with eggs for brunch and this was the case with the mushroom eggs Benedict ($15). The eggs were perfectly done. One of the better dishes that day.
We had some space for dessert and tried two items from the dessert menu. The Lemon Lava Cake ($14) had a citrusy creamy core that oozed out. The sweet and tarty taste was enjoyed by all.
Our other dessert was Bailey’s soufflé ($14). The coffee ice cream went very well with the creamy chocolate core of the soufflé. We thought that the two desserts were both very good, a notch above the savoury dishes.
We thought that getting a table in a far away place like Vineyard HortPark Restaurant would be a breeze, but were surprised that all the indoor tables were booked for lunch. Fortunately we managed to get a table as we were early and promised not to linger for too long. The lunch there was a pleasant affair, marred however by some pesky flies that managed to get indoors. We tried our hand at wildlife photography while waiting for the food. The fat flies with no fear of humans were quite easy targets.
