A good restaurant name has the ability to tantalize your taste buds before you even enter the restaurant. The name The French Table may conjure up images of delicious French cuisine and special dates or expense-account meals. However, The French Table at Waterway Point is a casual diner serving affordable Japanese European dishes. There are, in fact, only few French dishes on its menu. We think of it as sort of the equivalent of Jack’s Place – a nice place for a good meal at reasonable prices.
The French Table at Waterway Point has a colourful contemporary interior decor. It has the feel of a modern Japanese cafe and there are French slogans on the walls.
The 2 signature dishes on its menu are the Duck Confit and the Roasted Chicken. Other items on its menu include Cassoulet, fish & chips, lamb and steaks. The diner also offers curry rice, salad, pasta, pizza, waffles and desserts. The French Table at Waterway Point currently has a set lunch for $12.90.
We ordered the Set Lunch ($12.90) and the Chef’s Signature TFT Finely Roasted Chicken ($15.90 for half chicken). GST and service charge would be added to the bill. Free ice water was available from service station.
The set lunch comprised soup, a main course, dessert and a drink. There were 2 main courses and 2 drinks to choose from. The soup of the day and the dessert were fixed. The set lunch we had consisted of Ice Japanese Green Tea, Cauliflower Soup, Linguine alle Vongole and Ice Cream.
The Cauliflower Soup was smooth and creamy. It was not particularly remarkable but not bad. The Linguine alle Vongole came with a reasonably generous amount of clams. The pasta was cooked so that it was firm to the bite. The simple light pasta dish with sweetish clams was flavourful and enjoyable.
The dessert which came with the set was a scoop of ice cream with crushed nuts and topped with a slice of strawberry. Served in a bright orange coffee cup it looked quite attractive and tasted good too. All in, the $12.90 set lunch was really good value for money.
The Roasted Chicken was one of the 2 signature dishes of The French Table. It was served with a choice of sauce – the mushroom cream sauce, the wasabi mushroom sauce and yuzu cream sauce. We opted for the yuzu cream sauce, which was a mistake. We found it to be a tad too sweet and overwhelmed the taste of the chicken. The chicken itself was well cooked and tasty with crisp skin and moist, tender meat.
The French Table at Waterway Point may not be the ideal place for a special anniversary celebration or impress the client dinner but it should be a very nice place for a simple good affordable meal. The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed. The service is efficient and friendly. There is a good variety on the menu. The food is not bad and the prices very reasonable.
