Mayim Chinese Cuisine 天乐里精品食馆 at Northpoint (Closed)

Mayim Chinese Cuisine (天乐里精品食馆) is a great place to know when looking for  quality Chinese food in a pleasant full service restaurant up North in Yishun. Mayim restaurant is located in Northpoint Shopping Centre, which is linked to the Yishun MRT Station and within walking distance of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, and serves a great variety of Southern and Northern Chinese dishes. Its menu includes rather innovative creations and dishes which are perfect for those who like to snap before they eat.

Mayim Chinese Cuisine is reasonably spacious and decorated in the typical casual Chinese eating house style. There are booth seats, small dining tables for 2 to 4 as well as big round tables for larger groups. It also has a private dining area.

The menu has colourful photos of enticing food – covering Northern Dim Sum, Cantonese Dim Sum, La Mian, Hong Kong Noodles, Fried Rice and a wide range of seafood, meat, soups and vegetables in traditional Chinese style or with lcoal and contemporary twists. We went to Mayim Restaurant for a light lunch and ordered the Pan Fried Bun with Chicken Filling ($1.50 each), Teochew Dumplings ($1.40 each) and their signature Sweet and Sour Pork ($12). We also ordered the Durian Custard Puff ($1.50) and Sou Mei Tea with Wolfberry fruit ($1.50 per person). The dim sum items are priced on a per piece basis (rather than per basket) but for certain items there is a requirement to order a minimum of 2 or 3 pieces. The usual Chinese restaurant overheads would be added to the bill  – appetizer ($0.50) and towel ($0.30 per person) plus service charge and GST.

After only a very short wait, the dim sum items were served. The Northern Chinese pan-fried buns looked simple but the taste was interesting. They were fluffy mantous (or steamed buns) fried so that the bottom of the buns became crunchy. The chicken filling was sweetish, sort of like minced char siew, and moist. On the whole, not exceptional but nice.

The next dim sum item was the Teochew Dumpling. The skin had a good texture and neutral taste and the filling, which included crunchy whole peanuts, was delicious.

The Sweet and Sour Pork, with dragon fruit, mango and strawberry, was served like some sort of exotic flower arrangement. The dish tantalized the eyes as well as the taste buds. The pork balls were coated with flour and fried. The outer layer was slightly crispy and infused with the sweet and sour sauce. The sauce was not too sweet and only a bit tangy. The meat was tender and flavourful. This is a dish we would order again.

The Durian Custard Puff had very light and flaky pastry. The durian custard was not too sweet. The taste of the local king of fruits was clearly discernible but the durian taste and smell were not overpowering. The custard puff was delightful.

The Sou Mei Tea with Wolfberry (寿楣杞子茶) was a white tea (寿楣) with wolfberry. It was aromatic and refreshing. It was supposed to be good for health and even promote longevity – there was no way to ascertain the accuracy of such claims but we drank more than a few cups in hope.

On the whole, when looking for a nice full service restaurant near the Yishun MRT station, Mayim Chinese Cuisine (天乐里精品食馆) in Northpoint would be a very good choice. The menu of this Chinese restaurant in Northpoint is extensive and interesting. The quality of the food is good and the prices are reasonable.
