All in one eat, drink and shop space has been taken to another level by Mahota Singapore. We are familiar with dining in grocers and supermarkets. We know of cafes selling jewellery & clothes and bistro in a design workshop. There are furniture stores, bicycle shops and book shops selling food and drinks. Mahota Commune in Singapore beats all we have seen so far. Mahota Commune is an organic food market, a restaurant, a cafe, a lifestyle studio, a DIY wood-workshop and a clinic, yes a TCM wellness clinic – all in one common space on level 3 of Kitchener Complex.
Mahota Kitchen 泰生厨房 serves Italian fusion food as well as hot pot sets. The menu features lots of greens, organic free range beef and fresh seafood. See our posts on 泰生厨房 Mahota Kitchen.
Mahota Pantry offers organic coffee, smoothies, slow pressed juices and other beverages. Quiches, salads, sandwiches, cakes and pastries are also available.
Mahota Pantry has a children’s play area. There is also a special kids menu.
Here are photos of sections of the menu of Mahota Pantry.
The 9 Element Bento Box ($19.90) looked good. It was a tasty meal and nutritious one too. The Chciken Ceasar Salad Wrap ($16.80) was also enjoyable although we did not expect the hard crispy tortilla shells.
We also tried Mahota Pantry’s beetroot red velvet cake ($7.80) and Slow Pressed Juice No. 3 ($7.90). The cake was denser than the usual red velvet cake that we had tried and not as sweet. Slow Pressed Juice No. 3 was a concoction of coconut water, lemon, pear, red dragon fruit and chia seed. All the ingredients used for both items were said to be organic natural produce. We also had a cup of cappuccino ($5) brewed using organic beans. GST would be added to the bill. There was no service charge.
A wide variety of natural and organic food is in the supermarket. Spices, cooking ingredients, meats, fruits, wine as well as tableware and kitchen accessories are available.
Most of the food and ingredients used in Mahota Kitchen and Mahota Pantry are sold in Mahota Market. Some of the produce are from Mahota’s own farm and winery. We include a few photos below to give an idea of the prices at Mahota Market.
Mahota DIY Space
Tools for woodwork are available for loan so that you can try your hands at wood carving or realise your dream of being a modern carpenter. Mahota conducts carpentry workshops.
Mahota Activity Studio
Fitness classes and group exercises are conducted in the studio. Yoga zen and meditation stretching are among the classes you can join.
Mahota Singapore also organises cooking classes, art & design exhibitions, wine & cheese tastings, coffee appreciation and community walks.
All the healthy eating and exercise should keep you in perfect health but if you are feeling less than tip top, you can make an appointment to see a doctor or a therapist at Mahota Clinic. They say the clinic’s staff can asses a person’s physical condition and devise a program of therapy and lifestyle management to help the person achieve a healthy way of life in harmony with nature.
Mahota has a flagship store in Shanghai. Mahota Singapore just opened in May 2016 but traces its roots to the Prime Supermarket which was set up by the founders’ family at Block 803, King George Road, a few blocks away from Mahota’s location at 809 French Road.
Mahota Singapore’s website says that its aim is to create “an ecosystem guided by the principles of symbiosis and sustainability, an open space where all who care about how we live may gather to share good food, learn more about the world we live in and make new friends, maybe even pick up a new skill or two”. It is a lofty goal but we think they have made a good start in Singapore. Mahota Commune is a nice retail store for organic food with a pleasant space for meals or drinks with friends – overall certainly an interesting concept.
