Lunch at Hokkaido Izakaya at Japan Food Town, Wisma Atria

Hokkaido Izakaya Japan Food Town - 5

We continue our exploration of the new restaurants in Japan Food Town in Wisma Atria with a lunch at Hokkaido Izakaya. The closely-placed small tables and chairs give it a casual izakaya atmosphere. Unfortunately, the lunch time menu at Hokkaido Izakaya was a very limited list, with only around ten food items. Which means that we will have to return again to try out the items on the full menu.

Here is a picture of the Hokkaido Izakaya lunch menu.  We also have a picture of parts the regular menu which we took at a previous visit to Japan Food Town. The full menu looked more interesting as it contained diverse items from Hokkaido. Anyway, we had to make do with what we had and so we ordered a Salmon Belly Set ($15) and an Atka Mackerel (Hokke) Set ($18) from the lunch menu.

The salmon belly set featured grilled pieces of salmon belly as the main dish, with rice, miso soup and pickles on the side. The salmon belly was juicy and fatty as can be expected. It was a simple and pleasant meal. The rice tasted good by itself and even better with the oiliness of the salmon.

We had rather low expectations of the mackerel as it is often regarded as a lower grade of fish that is associated with a lower level of refinement as compared to other “good” types of fish. We were quite surprised by the smoothness of the Atka mackerel  that was served with our second dish. Half a fish was served as part of the meal. This type of mackerel, known as Hokke in Japanese, was almost delicate in its texture and had no strong fishy smell.

Overall our lunch at Hokkaido Izakaya was a simple and straightforward one. With the restricted menu, we focused on what Hokkaido is famous for – their highly rated seafood. The fish lunches that we had were rice with simple grilled salmon and mackerel seasoned with a sprinkle of salt and a squeeze of lemon juice. They were decent meals for the price of the set lunch. We would have preferred more variety but dinner at Hokkaido Izakaya is always an option.
