We just discovered the most scenic place in Singapore for laksa. Our initial impression of the Casa Verde Singapore restaurant at the Botanic Gardens was that it was one of those places catering to tourists. But we recently tried the laksa at this cafe and found it to be surprisingly good. There is now another reason for us to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Casa Verde is situated at the second entrance to the Gardens, near Nassim Road. Our subsequent research revealed that it is a part of the Les Amis group. Housed in one of the buildings that are part of the visitors’ centre cluster, it looked very low-key and blended very well with the tropical landscape. Most of the seating is outdoors which are the best places to sit and enjoy the view of the trees.
The Casa Verde menu was quite comprehensive, with a good mix of western (pizza pasta etc) and local food items (including hor fun, bak kut teh and laksa). We thought we would try the laksa ($9.50) as the “most local” of the lot. Here are pictures of two of the panels of the menu (there are more).
A numbered buzzer was provided after payment. However, unlike other buzzer arrangements, the one here at Botanic Gardens was more civilised. It does not buzz and the food was served to us instead.
These are different views of the Botanic Gardens laksa. Frankly we had expected a laksa that was tuned to cater for foreign visitors. But that was not the case. This was as good a laksa as anywhere else. The level of spiciness was just right. Hot enough to feel the kick but not burn out the other flavours. The bowl was also full of ingredients, egg, prawns, tau pok and fish cake slices. The only slight negative was that the prawns felt too unnaturally crunchy. But overall very good.
Casa Verde seems to be a good place to take visitors to a tourist attraction in Singapore and also introduce some local food items to them. A very scenic place to eat, view the greenery and people-watch. We did walk around to work off the calories and discovered this tranquil pond (picture below) in Botanic Gardens that we had hitherto not seen before. Pokemon fans will find lots of stops in the area. Eat, run, walk, see, catch. There is now at least one reason for everyone to visit the Botanic Gardens.
