The Red House Katong: Heavenly Wang Cafe

The Red House Katong

The Red House Katong

We must admit that we were a little disappointed when we found out that the restored Katong Red House would be occupied by Heavenly Wang Cafe. We had expected the iconic Katong landmark to be taken up by a hip specialty cafe or an unique experiential restaurant. Instead we would get a local kopi outlet which we could find in many malls and food courts in Singapore. However, having visited The Red House Katong : Heavenly Wang, we must say we were impressed by how the cafe had been done up. The Red House Katong : Heavenly Wang has a neat casual yesteryear ambience and is a very pleasant place where one can get good affordable local coffee and food.

We drop by the Heavenly Wang Cafe for tea and ordered a Coffee and Bread Stick set ($3), a large Kopi C ($2.50) and a piece of Peanut Roll Cake ($2.50). The order and payment were made at the counter. The food and beverages were served to us over the counter as soon as we made the payment. There was no extra service charge or GST.

The coffee was the traditional Singapore kopi tiam coffee. It was strong and aromatic. The sugar bread stick that came with the set was a bit chewy. Dipped it into the coffee and we got our simple nostalgic breakfast meal. The Peanut Roll Cake also brought back memories of the cakes which used to be sold in the old school confectioneries. Coated with crushed peanuts and topped with cream and kaya, it was a simple treat.

Katong Red House : Heavenly Wang Cafe

The Red House Katong : Heavenly Wang has been able to capture the nostalgia and essence of the famous Katong Bakery & Confectionery, which used to occupy the Red House. It might not be hip or swanky, but it is homely and accessible. Anyone can go there from early in the morning till late in the evening for a a drink and light bites or to take away bread or cakes. In a sense, the spirit of the popular historical Katong Bakery has returned to the Red House in Katong.
