Starker Bistro Katong Square may become one of the best places in Katong for a group night out and having fun. It is distinctive and easy to locate; has indoor and outdoor seating and can accommodate big groups. It has large TV screens for sports fans; serves the signature Starker Fresh Beer, freshly brewed German style beer, as well as wine, liquor and cocktails. Every evening at Starker Katong can feel like Octoberfest. Starker Katong is also a good place for a family meal or eating alone. In addition to pork knuckles and German roasts, popular European dishes, pizzas, burgers and desserts are on the menu of Starker Bistro.
Starker Bistro occupies a glass structure on the large concourse of the new Katong Square, which sits on the site of the former Joo Chiat Police Station. Starker Bistro has a large “al fresco” dining area which is actually sheltered from the elements by a high glass roof. The open-air area is simply decorated but with the colours used, big sun shades, plants and a beer barrel wall, it is visually interesting and attractive.
The air-conditioned indoor area is exciting and appealing. It is designed to give you the impression of dining in the patio and garden of a rustic Mediterranean villa. The front portion of the dining area is under a glass roof which lets in a lot of sunlight in the day. In the evening, eating there will be like dining under the stars.
The bar is in the air-conditioned area. It is a nice spot if you are eating or drinking alone. The menu for bar snacks is quite comprehensive.
We have tried their Pulled Pork Sliders ($16.80). They were nice but we found the sweetish sauce for the pork a little overpowering. Have the sliders with some beer and they should be fine.
We have described the Starker beer in our earlier post – Starker Fresh Beer in HillV2.
Main Menu of Starkers Bistro
Here are pictures of a few pages of the main menu of Starker Katong Square.
We went there for lunch and ordered a Fish & Chips ($16.80) and a Duck Confit ($19.80). GST and Service Charge would be added to the bill. Iced water was served while we waited for the food.
The fish and chips came with salad and the portion was of reasonable size. The fish fillet had a nice clean taste and the batter was crisp. The house made tartar sauce was very good and was probably the item that made the dish.
The Duck Confit came with salad and cherry tomatoes. The well-browned and crisp duck leg sat on a bed of mashed potatoes. The duck was quite tasty and had herbs imparted flavours but we thought it was a bit too dry and the meat lacked tenderness. The most enjoyable part of the dish was the cherry tomatoes which were sweet and juicy.
Starker Katong Square is a pleasant spacious place which caters to a wide spectrum of clientele. You can go there for a hearty European meal, bring kids there for pizza and desserts or hang out with your buddies over barrels of fresh beer and pub snacks. Starker Bistro Katong Square is a welcomed addition to the vibrant Katong food scene.
