Royal London Duck at Mandarin Gallery (Closed)

According to a Straits Times article on 24 July 2016, the Royal London Duck restaurant in Mandarin Galley was set up by f & b group Fei Siong after they split from their partnership with another group that operated the London Fat Duck in Scotts Square. This new Singapore duck restaurant takes up the space formerly taken by Jones the Grocer at Mandarin Gallery, Orchard Road.

The difference between the decor of the Royal London Duck and the former Jones the Grocer was like day and night. In place of the dark and cozy feel of Jones is a brightly lit and practical layout of Royal London Duck.

Here are pictures of some pages from the Royal London Duck menu. Staying with the successful formula of London Fat Duck at Scotts, the menu at Royal includes the duck dishes as well as a range of dim sum and noodle items. We ordered a duck dish and a few other items.

The XO sauce fried carrot cake ($5.80) was tasty and enjoyable.

The “lettuce with preserved beancurd” ($9.80) turned out to be a few leaves of blanched lettuce with preserved beancurd (‘hoo joo’) sauce. A tasty but pricey dish.

The basket of 3 steamed salted egg yolk charcoal buns ($5.20) reminded us of a certain famous mouse. We did not quite taste charcoal in the black buns or salted egg in the orange runny core of the bun, but we enjoyed it as it looked good and the taste was nice.

Having tried the usual roast duck at London Fat Duck in Scotts Square, we thought that we should try something different and ordered the crispy aromatic duck ($25 for half a duck). We are not sure it was a right decision as this crispy aromatic duck was very dry. It was meant to be eaten with some vegetable trimmings and with a wrap, somewhat like Peking duck. The wrap and sauce, thankfully reduced the dryness of the duck.

The pan-fried chicken dumpling was quite a good dish as the taste was fine and the presentation was the best of the dishes that day. Overall, we had mixed opinions about the food at the restaurant. Service at the restaurant was not the best that we had experienced.
