Have you stopped going to Centrepoint Orchard just because Robinson’s is no longer there? Well maybe its time to reconnect with the mall in Orchard Road, Singapore because it has undergone quite a bit of transformation. The number of restaurants have increased and a new eating place seems to open every week. The most recent one being Kyoaji Dining, a new Japanese restaurant on the fourth floor of the Centrepoint.
Kyoaji Singapore has the typical simple, uncluttered decor of Japanese restaurants. Using light wood panels and un-fussy furniture, it is a comfortable place to have lunch.
Here are pictures of some sample pages from the big, glossy Kyoaji Dining menu. What caught our eye was the set lunch menu – the beautiful looking pictures also had some rather attractive prices.
We tried the Shiro Maguro Aburi Maki ($22). It looked good in the menu and even better in real life. These pieces of sushi rolls were served beautifully presented. Each piece had a layer of seared white tuna around the sushi roll.
The Dobin Mushi ($15) did not have the most concentrated teapot broth that we have tried but it was flavourful and contained a generous amount of ingredients.
We ordered three of the set lunch items. The first one was the sushi gozen ($22). It was a set meal with salad, chawanmushi, udon soup and a 9-piece sushi platter. The chawanmushi served that day was pretty good. The udon and salad were average. The sushi was not gourmet quality, but we thought it was very good considering the price of this gozen at Kyoaji Japanese Dining.
Next, we show you the tempura gozen ($20). This is roughly the same as the sushi gozen except for the tempura and rice replacing the sushi and udon. Our comments are similar. Not the best tempura in town but very fair quality considering the price.
The third item from the Ayoaji Dining set lunch menu was the Gyu Niku Shogayaki Gozen ($16). The stewed beef was very good. This was probably the best item that we ordered that day.
Many Japanese set lunch items will simply end with a slice of fruit for dessert. At Kyoaji Singapore, the dessert was surprisingly more elaborate. I am not sure what it was – probably some kind of custard with a nice topping of Japanese red beans. But it looked and tasted very good. A similar dessert of such quality would easily cost close to this price of one of the Kyoaji set meals in one of the trendy dessert cafes on Orchard Road. These desserts ended our meal at the new Kyoaji Japanese restaurant in Centerpoint on a sweet note.
