Instagram-worthy Dessert Place – Non Entrée Desserts at Rangoon Road (Closed)

Non Entree Cafe at Rangoon Road

If you are one who likes to point your camera lens in the direction of the most photogenic food you can find, then you may want to pack your gear and head to Non Entrée Desserts at Rangoon Road. There may be no better dessert place in Singapore to capture Instagram-worthy images of unique desserts. The decor of Non Entrée Desserts makes it a rather Instagram-worthy cafe but it is their desserts that truly  deserve showing off.

Non Entree at Rangoon Road

Non Entrée Desserts is located in a part of Singapore which would probably not be listed as a photo worthy place. The area surrounding the dessert cafe is rather drab and unremarkable. The bright yellow frontage of Non Entrée Desserts and the rattan furniture on its front porch ensure that the cafe stands out from its neighbors.

The interiors of Non Entrée Desserts have a mix of retro and whimsical elements. Generally, the feel is unpretentious and relaxed.

Non Entree Ice Cream

As its name announces, Non Entrée serves no mains. It offers pastries, waffles, artisanal ice cream and a range of plated desserts.

Non Entrée Desserts at Rangoon Road recently introduced a new themed supplementary menu – Back to the Future: 那些年我们吃过的回忆. The new menu items are modern desserts & cakes infused with local motifs & flavours from the 1980-90s. Thus, there are creative desserts like “Horlicks Avalanche”, “Bak Chor Mee”, “Singapore Breakfast” and cakes like “Tutu Kueh”, “Gem Biscuit” and “Ang Ku Kueh”.

We ordered the “Bak Chor Mee” ($14.90) from the Back to the Future Theme Menu. It really did look like a bowl of noodles with an extra large fish ball. The “noodles” were in fact strips of mango pudding and the “fish ball” was coconut parfait. It was a creative and interesting concoction. The taste was not bad but the novelty factor is probably the only real reason to order the $14.90 “Bak Chor Mee”.

The Rubber Ducky and Chocolate Avalanche of  Non Entrée Desserts must have taken up an inordinate amount of Instagram server space. We cannot think of any good reason why we should add to good looking desserts photo frenzy but we ordered the Chocolate Avalanche ($13.90) nevertheless. We convinced ourselves we really liked to eat lava cake with ice cream. We ordered another item from the regular menu – the Pandan Waffles with a scoop of Gula Melaka ice cream ($9.50).

The Pandan Waffles were nice and crisp on the outside and really fragrant. The gula Melaka ice cream was creamy and delicious. The combination reminded us of kaya and was really enjoyable.

The iconic Chocolate Avalanche was a warm chocolate cake with Valrhona dark chocolate lava which, when the cake was cut, would flow onto the chocolate-almond nougatine and orange-infused vanilla ice-cream contained in a round glass jar. We ordered the Chocolate Avalanche primarily because we thought it might be Instagram-worthy; it was and Snapchat-worthy too. It was also delicious. Richness, lightness, sweetness, fruitiness, bitterness — all the good things about a delectable dessert – could be found in this pretty dessert. The Chocolate Avalanche was a feast for the senses.  The Chocolate Avalanche would be a good reason to visit Non Entrée Desserts at Rangoon Road even if you have absolutely no intention of taking photographs of anything.

Non Entrée Desserts at Rangoon Road is not in the best of locations. Availability of car parking space could be a problem and the walk to the nearest MRT station is not short. Based on our experience when we visited the popular dessert place, the service level could probably be improved. Nevertheless, overall, we enjoyed our visit to Non Entrée Desserts. The space is pleasant and cosy and the cafe has an array of creative and beautiful desserts. Some of its desserts are not just very pretty but are quite delicious too.
