We continued our search for good set lunch deals in the city and found a lunch set for only $9.90 nett at 包今天 Bao Today Hotel Rendezvous. Available on weekdays from 10.00 am to 3.00pm, the set comprises a main, a dessert and a drink. With purchase of the set meal, you can also enjoy a 50% discount on up to 3 dim sum items from the a la carte menu.
Bao Today or “Bao Jin Tian” is a clever play on the moniker of the legendary Justice Bao of China’s Song Dynasty – “Bao Qingtian”. Bao Today serves fresh daily-baked baos, dumplings and other dim sum items. It also have rice and noodle dishes on the menu. Here are pictures of sections of the menu of Boa Today.
Bao Today @ Hotel Rendezvous has also just re-introduced their Dim Sum Buffet for dinner; priced at $16.80 on Monday to Thursday and $19.80 from Friday to Sunday.
There is a New High Tea Promotion at Bao Today Hotel Rendezvous where dim sum as well as all other food items on the menu are at 50% Discount from 3 pm to 5 pm.
The decor of Bao Today Hotel Rendezvous is functional and unpretentious. It is unlikely to win any interior design prizes but the place is neat and pleasant enough.
There are order chits on the tables to facilitate ordering. There is a separate order chit for the set meal.
I decided to have the $9.90 set lunch and opted for Century Egg Congee, Iced Peach Tea and Mango Pudding. I was also tempted to try their Peanut Bao (2 pieces at $1.50 after the 50% discount). The food was served within about 10 minutes.
The Century Egg Congee came in a small claypot. The portion was not very substantial but adequate for someone with average appetite. The porridge was light and creamy. The minced meat, century egg and other ingredients combined to make the dish flavourful. It was not the best century egg congee I had tried but it was quite good and enjoyable.
The Peanut Baos did look like large peanuts. They were normal steamed buns with sweet chopped peanuts filling. They were nice but were more like desserts than regular dim sum.
The mango pudding came in a plastic container. That lowered my expectation somewhat. Perhaps, that was their ploy – and it worked. The mango pudding served plain came with bits of fresh mango. It tasted quite good.
One the whole it was a simple satisfying meal. The deal of the $9.90 set lunch and 50% discount on dim sum meant that I had a bowl of tasty congee, a dim sum, dessert and drink for the grand total of $11.60, with no other extras or hidden charges. A good lunch in a pleasant air-conditioned setting right in the heart of downtown Singapore – I believe Justice Bao would say that the Boa Today SETisfying Lunch is more than a fair deal.
