Grand Pavilion Cuisine & Cafe is a restaurant serving Cantonese cuisine as well as a cafe serving dim sum and Singaporean local dishes. Staffed with chefs from Hong Kong, Grand Pavilion Restaurant occupies the inner space which gives diners a view of the Marina Bay. The restaurant serves the full range of typical Cantonese dishes. Grand Pavilion Cafe is the casual sibling out in the open concourse area. The Cafe serves dim sum as well as a variety of local delights like Hainanese Chicken Rice, Laksa, Prawn Noodle Soup and Bak Kut Teh.
Grand Pavilion Cafe is located on the 2nd level of Esplanade, Theatres by the Sea. It occupies an open space outside the main Grand Pavilion Restaurant. The decor is contemporary and quite attractive, though the ornate classical art pieces would seem somewhat out of place – perhaps it is a matter of personal taste in that regard.
Grand Pavilion Cafe has the typical range of dim sum with a few unusual items. Also on its menu are double-boiled soups, salad and Asian delights as well as desserts. Here are pictures of the Grand Pavilion dim sum menu and the Grand Pavilion Cafe menu.
We went to Grand Pavilion Cafe for lunch and ordered the Pan-fried Radish cake ($4.80 for 3 pieces), the Glutinous Rice with Abalone & Dried Scallop ($9.80 for 2 pieces) and Steamed Siew Mai with Quail Eggs ($5.80) for 3 pieces). We also ordered the Deep-fried Chicken with Prawn Paste ($10.90).
The Deep-fried Chicken with Prawn Paste did not look great but it was crispy and tasty. The Pan-fried Radish cake was of the expected standard.
The Siew Mai with Quail Egg was quite an unusual dim sum item. It did not look like the standard steamed pork and shrimp dumpling. The shape was like an irregular pyramid with a roundish top. Underneath the dumpling skin was half the usual siew mai filling and a hard-boiled quail egg. It was delicious and we would order the dish again.
The Grand Pavilion Glutinous Rice looked like the normal lotus leaf wrapped glutinous rice in other dim sum restaurants. We were expecting to find small cut pieces of abalone and scallops in the rice rolls. That was indeed the case with regard to the scallops but we were pleasantly surprised to find a whole small abalone in each of the rice roll. There were other ingredients, like mushroom and egg yolk, in the rice. All the ingredients come together well. We usually order glutinous rice just as filler when eating dim sum but we really enjoyed the Glutinous Rice with Abalone & Dried Scallop at Grand Pavilion.
The menu of Grand Pavilion Cafe is not extensive but there is sufficient variety for casual dining. There are number of interesting items that are not commonly available elsewhere. The food we tried was also good. The setting was pleasant and comfortable and the service was courteous and efficient. Grand Pavilion Cafe in Esplanade Mall goes into our list of favourite casual dining places.
