Lamb Biryani and Turkish Delights at Levant Singapore

(Note: We believe the outlet has closed)

Levant Singapore is a restaurant in Watten Estate serving Middle Eastern cuisine. Along the stretch of restaurants along Greenwood Avenue serving mostly Western fare (and a few Japanese restaurants), Levant stands out as the one that is quite different.

We had visited and written about Levant before. This time, we knew what we wanted to eat even before we got there. Their wonderful lamb biryani. But it had been some time since we were there and we wondered if anything had changed.

There were some lunchtime deals at Levant starting from $15 for a soup, main, dessert and coffee. We opted for the lamb shank biryani ($40) that serves two persons.

There were two types soup – ginger and lamb. We tried both. The ginger soup was light and with a healthy ginger taste. This was probably good for digestion. The lamb soup was a stronger soup with a meaty taste. Both were not the run of the mill soup served at other restaurants. A tad salty, but satisfying.

We came prepared with a bottle of wine to go with the lamb. A red Bordeaux to refresh the palate after each mouthful of the lamb biryani. Standard corkage charge at Levant Singapore was $20, but a small reduction was made for us on that day.

The lamb shank with biryani rice was served in a metal pot. The lamb was deboned and served with the rice for us.   The taste was as delicious as we remembered it to be. The lamb had apparently been cooked for four hours and was delicately soft. There was enough of the distinctive taste of lamb to make this dish tasty, yet without the overpowering meaty taste that this meat sometimes has.

For desserts, there was a choice of baklava or Turkish delight for each set lunch. We tried both. The baklava was too sweet and oily for our liking. The Turkish delights, especially the ones with nuts embedded inside were delightful.

Overall,  although the price for the lamb shank set lunch seemed to have increased since our last visit, the taste has remained wonderfully good. Lunchtime at Greenwood Avenue was nice and peaceful, as compared to the hustle and bustle of the evening business (particularly on Fridays and Saturdays when reservations are recommended).  A slow lunch with a bottle of wine at Levant Singapore is good way to spend a nice relaxing lunch on a weekday.
