Baristas in retro specs, coffee in jam jars and a bicycle or two are commonly found in many lookalike hipster cafes. A few may bring in a scooter, and even one with a sidecar, to distinguish themselves from the crowd. A restaurant in Hong Kong Central upped the ante considerably by having a brand new car in the foyer leading to the restaurant –  a Mercedes S500 e no less. Of course it can do so as it is the Mercedes me Store Hong Kong – a unique combination of car showroom, retail store and lifestyle restaurant. The sleek driving machine with an air of sophistication and cutting-edge technology is out the league of The Ordinary Patrons but we could get our hands on some sumptuous food served in Restaurant Mercedes me Hong Kong.

The decor Restaurant Mercedes me Hong Kong is like that of the interiors of the Mercedes cars – using leather, wood and shining metals to create a luxurious feel with understated elegance. It is not big. Bathed with warm lighting it has a laid back classy atmosphere. There are regular dining tables, communal tables, snug booths and seats at the bar.

Menu

Restaurant Mercedes me Hong Kong says that the way they create the restaurant menu is like the way Mercedes-Benz make their cars. They take the top talents and best products from all over the world to build a menu. Drawing inspiration from Japan, Spain and Peru they used quality ingredients from the region to create unique treats. The lunch offering is quite limited – tapas, 3 types of grills and desserts. Pictures of the lunch menu are below.

Lunch at Restaurant Mercedes me Hong Kong

We ordered the Sobrassada & Mozzarella Bikini (HK$120) and Baby Japanese Eggplant (HK$120) from the Hot Tapas section of the menu and the Iberico Pork Presa (HK$380) from the Grill section.

The reference to bikini in the Sobrassada & Mozzarella Bikini is to the barely there type of string bikini. We could taste the cheese and sausages between the toast, but only barely. The dish is otherwise quite unremarkable.

The Baby Japanese Eggplant with miso glaze, crunchy garlic ans sesame was an excellent dish. It was beautifully presented and you can spend quite a lot of time admiring the little eggplant from various angles. The eggplant was rich and creamy and there was a nice smokey taste. An attractive dish and it actually tasted better than it looked.

The grilled Spanish pork with smoked Spanish pepper was also very good. The meat was flavourful, tender and juicy. The sweetness and slight spiciness of the pepper added contrast and complexity. It was a simple looking but delicious dish.

Restaurant Mercedes me dessert

We had the Dulce de Leche (HK$120) as desserts. The South American milk based confectionery was served with coffee sponge and whisky curd. There was an interesting mix of texture and overall an enjoyable dessert.

Having lunch Restaurant Mercedes me Hong Kong was a very good experience. The setting was elegant with a laid back charm and the service was attentive and professional. The menu is limited but overall the food was enjoyable. With Singaporeans’ passion for cars and obsession with food, Restaurant Mercedes me should be a hit here if it decides to open up here.
