Early Christmas lunch at Brasserie Les Saveurs (Renamed as The Astor Grill by St. Regis)

Now that the lights are up at Orchard Road, carols are playing at the shopping malls and the rainy season is in full swing, it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Singapore.  We thought we should join in the festivities with an early Christmas lunch at Brasserie Les Saveurs, the French restaurant of the St Regis Hotel. From now till 24 December 2016 (Mondays to Saturdays), they are serving a Delightful Festive Buffet Lunch menu at $58++ per head.

The Brasserie Les Saveurs is an elegant restaurant on the ground floor of the St Regis Hotel, Singapore. The double height ceiling and a full glass wall on one side ensures that the place gets lots of natural sunlight. The restaurant is spacious and the tables are spaced far apart. We were seated at one of the best tables in the house, in an alcove which has privacy and lots of space. The raised platform also provided a good vantage point to look out into the rest of the dining space.

The Festive Lunch menu basically serves the appetizers and desserts buffet style. There was a choice of main course. We selected the oven-roasted tom turkey and the char-grilled pork loin steak.

The appetizer spread was quite limited and not very interesting.  A couple of soups, a range of salad items and a basic selection of sushi rolls.

The dessert buffet items were definitely more diverse and interesting.

No festive lunch at a French restaurant would be complete without a good bottle of wine. We brought along a bottle of 2010 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc.  With the diverse range of food items on the buffet table, the white Hermitage was refreshing and complex enough to go with the different types of food on the table that day.

Here are pictures of our appetizers that we concocted out of the items at the buffet.   The grilled capsicums and the tofu salad were the highlights. Overall, we were pleased with what we created out of the items available.

Main Courses

The char-grilled pork loin steak was a straightforward dish. The pork was quite dry. Fortunately, the sauces accompanying it were tasty and rescued the dish.

We are not normally fans of turkey, but this being the thanksgiving season, we thought a turkey dish would add to the festive mood. Two types of meat (leg and breast)  were served. We liked the leg meat portions. The breast parts were overdone to the point of being almost mushy.  The vegetables and sauce were good.

Here are pictures of some of the things we ate for dessert. The desserts were much better than the appetisers.  Coffee was served as part of the lunch.

Overall, a satisfying almost three-hour lunch at Brasserie Les Saveurs. The appetisers and main courses were not bad but were below what we were expecting from this highly-rated restaurant. The desserts were very good. The slight disappointment with the food was however made up for by the beautiful ambience and wonderful service. We can’t think of a better way to spend a better part of the afternoon in Singapore for $58++, especially on a day when the Singtel broadband network decided to take a break, causing the most severe disruption in recent memory. In times like this, Keep Calm and Eat is perhaps the best response.
