Coffee is an afterthought in many restaurants, and even some cafes, in Singapore. That is definitely not the case at the newly opened Caffè Vergnano 1882. Founded in 1882, Caffè Vergnano is Italy’s oldest family-owned coffee roasters. The traditional Italian dedication to serving a good cup of coffee is evident in the beautifully appointed Caffè Vergnano 1882 at South Beach – from the range of equipment and accessories for making coffee to the expertise and care of the baristas in making coffee one cup at a time. The Italian cafe bar also serves some nice food to go with their good coffee.
Caffè Vergnano 1882 has a very nice “sheltered al fresco area”. The indoor area with its full glass frontage and high ceiling is sleek and classy and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It is a place where you feel like lingering.
The main highlight of their menu is of course the exclusive 1882 Espresso blend coffee. However, light bites and mains like pies, lasagne and pasta, are available. Cakes and some good old Italian desserts are also available. Here are pictures of a few pages of Caffè Vergnano 1882 menu.
We went to have a light lunch at Caffè Vergnano 1882 at South Beach. We ordered an Americano ($4.50), a Latte ($4.50), a Chicken & Mushroom Pie ($11.80) and a Beef Pastrami with Arugula Sandwich ($11.90). No service charge or GST was added to the bill.
Order and payment were made at the counter but the food and drinks would be served. We could help ourselves to water from the water dispenser. Cutlery and a napkin were nicely packed inside a paper bag and brought to our table.
The latte was very good – smooth and rich. The Americano also did not disappoint. It was aromatic and had a nice body and texture.
The Beef Pastrami with Arugula Sandwich was nicely presented with a generous helping of salad. It was not bad but you could probably get just as good sandwiches at most cafes.
The Chicken & Mushroom Pie was served piping hot, also with salad on the side. The crust had a nice bite. There were chunky pieces of chicken in the pie. It was delicious.
The service at Caffè Vergnano 1882 was unhurried and friendly. The ambience is elegant yet cosy. It has the sit-down-and-chat cafe atmosphere. The coffee is good and the food is not bad. Their prices are very reasonable. Overall, Caffè Vergnano 1882 at South Baech is a very nice spot for a light meal or to enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee. We will be visiting Caffè Vergnano 1882 again.
