(2020 Update – Please check store opening hours before visit) Having lunch at Jones the Grocer Singapore @ Dempsey is like having lunch in a grocery store. The tables in the spacious double height ceiling space are surrounded by all kinds of fresh meats, cheeses and other foodstuffs. Originating from Australia, Jones the Grocer opened their first Singapore outlet at Dempsey Hill, then went into expansion mode some years back but has since cut back. At the moment, Jones the Grocer Dempsey is the only outlet in Singapore.
There is something special about the grocery/restaurant concept of Jones the Grocer Singapore that works so well with the Dempsey space. There is synergy between the open laid back feel of the Dempsey area and the layout of Jones and the way the retail is integrated with the restaurant. Which explains the constant stream of customers throughout the day. Their long opening hours is another attraction. Feel hungry any time from 8 am to 11 pm? JTG is waiting for you – seven days a week.
The indoor dining space is one of suburban chic. A very relaxed atmosphere except peak hours (i.e lunch time especially on weekends) when it can get quite crowded.
A walk-in cheese storage facility stores all kinds of cheese which will please turophiles.
Jones the Grocer Menu
Here are pictures of some pages from the menu.
We tried a Lamb Gryo ($26) – shredded lamb and vegetables clothed in warm pita bread. This was a less common dish. We liked the combination of the lamb and vegetables. The mint sauce added a refreshing touch and the lamb did not have a gamey taste. Sweet potato fries are always preferred above regular fries, so this was overall a good dish.
The BBQ Pork Ribs ($29) was a more regular dish. Everything was what they should be – the slow cooked pork was soft till they fell off the bone. Nice mash and toasted corn. The sauce was not too sweet. A safe choice any day.
The char-grilled Atlantic Salmon ($28) was another safe predictable dish. Well prepared, fresh and with a nice crisp skin.
Our most exciting item of the day was the Oreo Milkshake ($9.80). It probably contains a thousand calories, which is why we have not had a milkshake in a while. But on a day when we all had very safe, predictable choices, the sinful milkshake provided some relief from routine. Which probably sums up our experience eating at Jones the Grocer Singapore. A place to go for safe, well prepared food in a pleasant setting. Not high on excitement but Jones the Grocer Dempsey scores on reliability.
