Segar Restaurant Star Vista – Halal Zi Char Restaurant

Segar Restaurant Star Vista is one of the several new restaurants that have opened recently in this mall next to Buona Vista MRT station replacing those that have left.  The signboard at the Segar Restaurant Star Vista refers to itself as serving  “Great Tasting Halal Zi Char & Seafood for Everyone!” Now,  this we had to try.

The Segar Restaurant at Star Vista is part of the P2E restaurant group.  According to their website, their portfolio includes the West C’oz Cafe and Poh Kitchen. The Segar  brand currently has other outlets in Chinatown and Sims Way.

Segar at Star Vista has an air-conditioned area and a naturally ventilated area outside.  As Star Vista is designed to be a non-airconditioned mall,  there is enough air circulation to ensure that the outside area remains acceptably cool.  The dining area is quite basic but nicer than the typical zhi char place.

As it was one the final days of Chinese New Year, the place was packed. One of the attractions must be the traditional yu sheng – raw fish and salad for tossing to get good fortune in the new year of the rooster.  We noticed quite a few large tables of office people.  It must be convenient to have such a halal restaurant that facilitates the holding of these communal dining events for all.

The Segar Restaurant serves the usual zhi char dishes.  Their signature curry fish head costs $22, but was being promoted at a discounted price of $15.  We decided to try the fish head, lemon chicken ($10 for a small portion) and some steamed rice ($1 each).

The fish head curry looked promising in its large clay pot.  The flavour of the curry and vegetables (lady’s fingers, brinjal, long beans etc) was very good.   The perfect gravy to eat steamed rice with.  The fish head was rather small. We had to fish for it.  We think it was one half of a fish head (sliced down the middle).  As you can expect the meat content was not a lot, just enough for two person to eat get a small portion. But the quality of the fish was good. Fresh and cooked just right.

The lemon chicken was a good-sized portion for two persons.  Crisp deep-fried chicken with a sweetish lemon sauce.   The sauce was not too sweet to overpower the chicken. We liked this dish.  Total cost of lunch for two was about $31 including service charge and GST.
