Where to find affordable sushi in Singapore? We have a suggestion for you – Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka in the heart of Orchard Road. Japan Food Town in Wisma Atria, to be exact. We had visited this sushi restaurant from Tsukiji Tokyo when they first opened in 2016 but they only had a limited menu at that time. We were back recently and were impressed by what we saw (and ate).
Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka is a branch of a restaurant operating at the famous Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. It is a spacious restaurant at Wisma Atria Japan Food Town. Although sushi is their specialty, they also serve other types of Japanese food. Ordered separately, the price of each piece of sushi ranges from $3.50 (e.g. omelette or fish roe) to $13.50 (e.g. fatty tuna or sea urchin). But it is best to order by the mixed platters which offer better value for money, better still go at lunch time which is the best time to try their good, affordable sushi in Singapore. That is when some very reasonably priced sushi set lunches are offered.
Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka Menu
Here are pictures of the lunch menu as well as some portions of their ala carte or Grand Menu. The lunchtime sushi set meals range from $14.40 to $24.10. We had tried two of the most basic sets at our last visit. You can read about our visit here. This time, we decided to move up a notch and try a Hana Chirashi Don ($15.40) and a Edomae Jo Nigiri ($24.10).
The Hana chirashi don was beautifully presented. It was a lovely bowl of rice topped with raw fish. Even the lower priced Gekimori Chirashi Don that we tried the last time was very good. The slices of fish on top were rather thin, but the flavour was good. If our sushi/sashimi lunch budget is below $15, this is the item we would eat. The lunch set also comes with a soup and a chawanmushi.
Sitting at sushi bar counter meant that we got to watch the chef prepare the food at close range. This is the nigiri sushi platter in the midst of preparation. The raw fish bits were shiny and translucent – a good sign!
This is the completed platter of Edomae Jo Nigiri sushi. A good mix of various types of sushi including pink shrimps and one piece of fatty tuna. The taste of the sushi was also good. We think that it is hard to find such a comprehensive platter of good sushi in Singapore at the price of $24.10. We think this is one of the best example of affordable sushi in Singapore.
We also ventured beyond just raw fish and ordered grilled Greater Amberjack collar ($12). it was a very delicious piece of grilled fish. The meat was pure white, clean tasting and the fish was perfectly cooked.
It also appears that Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka has an accreditation as a Sake Navigator. Sushi and grilled fish is best eaten with some sake. We tried a Kitanoroman sake ($39 for 300ml). It was not bad but not memorable.
