877 calories – that is the caloric content of a plate of Nasi Briyani with Chicken according to the Ministry of Health’s website HealthHub. The good news for briyani lovers is that Mami Midah Briyani Stall in Eunos Food Centre serves a healthier version of Nasi Briyani which tastes just as good as the rich sinful ones.

Mami Midah Briyani Stall is located in the Eunos Crescent Food Centre which is just next to the Eunos MRT Station.  It is run by Madam Hamidah Dawood and her son, Mohammad Nazir Kassim.

Nasi Briyani is usually cooked with ghee which means high fat content. Madam Midah cooks her nasi briyani with vegetable oil instead of ghee, thus lowering the amount of saturated fat in her nasi briyani. She also uses low-sodium salt and evaporated milk instead of coconut milk. Does the healthier version of nasi briyani taste any different from those cooked with ghee and coconut milk? We headed to Mami Midah Briyani Stall to find out.

Mami Midah Briyani

We joined the queue at lunch time for the Indian-Muslim version of nasi briyani in Eunous. The queue moved quite slowly. It took a while for each order to be fulfilled. There were also a few customers in front of us who each ordered several packets to take away. Each plate or packet of nasi briyai was slowly and carefully prepared.

We ordered both the chicken briyani and mutton briyani ($5.50 per plate).  The meats were dished out from hot cooking pots and placed on the plates individually. Rice was placed on top of the meat and archar carefully added to the plate. Some curry was drizzled over the rice. In addition, a small bowl of dalcha was given.

Mami Midah Mutton Briyani

The plates of chicken briyani and mutton briyani looked the same because the meat was hidden underneath the rice. The piece of mutton was quite big and the piece of chicken was even bigger. The lean mutton was delicious but not as tender as we expected it to be. The chicken was well marinated and the meat was moist and tasty. The rice was aromatic and did not feel oily or heavy. The curry was quite thick and not spicy hot. The dalcha was also nice and when added to the rice made the rice even more enjoyable. The sweet and sour archar added a contrasting texture and complimented the nasi briyani well.

On the whole is was a very good meal. It was one of the best nasi briyani we have tried. Mami Midah’s briyani felt like a lighter and less oily version compared to the usual briyani we were used too. We did not feel bloated after finishing a plateful.

The Health Promotion Board (HPB) says “Tasty Doesn’t Have to be Unhealthy”. The healthier lighter version of nasi briyani at Mami Midah Briyani Stall was certainly tasty. The nasi briyani, with its variety of spices and curry, was packed with flavour. We do not know the caloric content of a plate of nasi briyani at Mami Midah – it would probably bust HPB’s recommended 500-calorie per meal limit – but it is delicious enough to forget about calorie counting.
