Strong Flour at Katong V is a new casual dining restaurant serving handmade pasta and pizza. Pastas at Strong Flour are freshly made on the premises. Pizzas are rolled and baked to order. It also offers paninis, stew and a few meat and fish dishes as well as desserts and good coffee. Beer and wine are also available. Strong Flour is a nice little neighbourhood Italian restaurant and a welcomed addition to the food options in Katong V.
Strong Flour is located in the open atrium of Katong V at the entrance facing Marine Parade Road. It is bright and airy. The decor is neat and smart but the faux marble tabletops tell you that the eatery is more a casual cafe than a formal dining establishment. You will be greeted and ushered to the table but you place your order at the cashier’s counter.
Strong Flour Freshly Made Pasta
Strong Flour is the latest eatery by the people of Group Therapy. According to their website, the “name references the specialized flour we use in the dough as well as our focus on fresh, hearty, good food“. We understand that strong flour is made from ‘hard’ wheat varieties which are high in gluten and are high in protein content . Apparently, strong flour is ideal for bread-making.
At Strong Flour, there is an open food preparation area. You can see pastas being freshly made. The finished products are displayed and you can buy the freshly made uncooked pastas.
Menu of Strong Flour
The menu of Strong Flour at Katong V is a fairly simple affair. It comes in the form of a laminated sheet. There is a fair selection of pastas and pizzas. In addition, there are daily specials written on the chalk board.
Strong Flour Pizza & Soup
We visited Strong Flour at Katong V for lunch and ordered a Chicken Soup ($10) and the Smoked Chicken Pizza ($18), which was the daily special on the board. No GST or service charge would be added to the bill.
The Chicken Soup was served within a few minutes after we placed or order. It came in a large shallow soup dish and the portion was quite substantial. We asked for a small bowl so that we could share the soup and was given a large cup.
There were chunks of chicken, beans, vegetables and lots of other ingredients in the soup. It was quite tasty but a little too peppery and spicy.
The Smoked Chicken Pizza looked kind of sad with its topping of chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and cheese. The taste was not bad. However, we thought the base of the pizza was quite ordinary. There were crispy bits at the edge but other parts of the dough base was soft and slightly chewy.
Strong Flour Coffee
We ordered Long Black ($3.50) to round off our lunch. The coffee turned out to be the best part of our meal. The freshly brewed coffee was very good – robust and aromatic.
We were not too impressed by the pizza we tried. Perhaps we should try their pastas and desserts the next time. However, the coffee at Strong Flour is a good reason for us visit the new place at Katong V more often. On the whole, we think Strong Flour at Katong V is a pleasant inviting place for a simple meal or a coffee break.
