Wimbly Lu is a cafe and chocolatier that has become well known for their chocolate truffles and waffles. Their popularity must be one of the reasons for the traffic woes in Jalan Riang off Upper Serangoon Road. Their new outlet, Wimbly Lu Tyrwhitt, is a cosy space in the hipster neighborhood of Jalan Besar-Lavender. Parking should be less of an issue at Tyrwhitt Road and, in any case, the location is more accessible by public transport
We have visited Little Wimbly Lu at Serangoon Gardens and were happy to chanced upon Wimbly Lu Tyrwhitt one evening while we were along Tyrwhitt Road. We were attracted by its brighly lit white facade and attractive interiors visible through the large glass panel.
Wimbly Lu Tyrwhitt is just located just opposite the Parc Sovereign Hotel and a few doors away from Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar. The shophouse premises is long and narrow. Half of the narrow space is taken up by the coffee bar and display counters in front and the kitchen behind. High bar tables and a few regular dining tables are neatly lined up against the wall in the remaining available space in the cafe. Retro lamps, mirrors, paintings on the wall and plants hanging from the ceiling lend a casual charm to the place. It feels cosy.
Wimbly Lu Tyrwhitt has a simple menu – offering pasta, baked rice and snacks. Breakfast items are available in the weekend. They have a good range of cakes and desserts. Their signature waffles as well as pancakes and crepes are also on the menu.
We ordered the waffles with a single scoop of honey cinnamon ice cream ($8.50) and a cup of long black ($4) and a cup of chai latte($5). Service charge and GST would be added to the bill.
The waffle was not fancy stuff. It looked kind of plain and ordinary with just some sugar sprinkled over it. Maple syrup was served on the side. The scoop of ice cream was modest in size. The ice cream was not too sweet and nice. The waffle was of the standard you would expect of Wimbly Lu waffle – light and airy with nice crisp outside and soft and fluffy inside.
The coffee was good – rich and creamy with little aftertaste. The chai latte was not too sweet and came with a stick of cinnamon so that we could control the level of spiciness.
Even though, there are many cafes in the Jalan Besar area, we still think Wimbly Lu Tyrwhitt is a good addition. It is a very pleasant and cosy dessert place. The prices are reasonable and their waffles remain one of our all time favourites.
