SRPS = Steamroom with The Pillar and Stones (Closed)

Steamroom with The Pillar and Stones (SRPS) is a new restaurant in the Orchard Central Mall, the building with many lifts and escalators. SRPS has a retail section that takes up a small part of the space on the 3rd level of the mall. It is a wall-less space, integrating the common corridor as part of the restaurant. Which is a good and bad thing. Good for space utilisation and visibility. Bad because the layout is busy and casual passers-by are walking through the restaurant.

It seems that the “Stones” is the art and retail part of the enterprise. The “Steamroom” represents the tea and coffee and “Pillar” the food components.  The decor is rather unique. We liked the spaciousness – natural light and a lot of space between the tables. We were not so keen on the chairs that have a hard curved rod as a backrest.

Steamroom with The Pillar and Stones Menu

We had the option of a Mother’s Day set menu for two ($60) and the regular menu. There was a 20% on items from the normal menu as part of their opening promotion.   We selected the Mother’s Day menu plus an item from the ala carte menu.

There were two starters.  Quinoa Salad with Seared Hamachi and Spanner Crab, wasabi mayonnaise and apple textures. They looked beautiful! The taste was also very good.  We can understand why the food section is The Pillar.

The beauty pageant continued into the main course. Gorgeous plates of Spiced Carrot Risotto and Sous-vide chicken breast. The chicken was slightly dry. The risotto was very good.

We ordered a 2015 Slider from the ala carte menu ($19).  It was a pulled pork burger.   This was also very good The pork was soft and flavourful. The potato pieces were expertly prepared – crisp at the edges and soft inside.

The set menu also came with a pot of Rose Red Cape tea, and concluded with a dessert – strawberry mousse cake. Another beautiful and delicious dish.  We had some coffees – long black and cappuccino ($4.5 and $5.5 respectively). The coffee was good, smooth but not too strong.

Overall, we went to Steamroom with The Pillar and Stones not knowing what to expect from a restaurant with such a strange name. We left, impressed with the high quality of the food. Service was also warm and friendly. If only they did not have the “no tap water” policy, we would have liked them more.  Refillable filtered water is on the menu at $3.50 per person.
