Ami Ami Great World City is a new Japanese restaurant in the equally new Shokutsu Ten Japanese Food Street in this shopping mall in River Valley. It seems that Singapore’s appetite for Japanese food is insatiable. This is the third Shokutsu Ten Japanese Food Street in Singapore. Their other locations are in Jurong Point and Nex. The concept is created by the RE&S group which has brands such as Kuriya, Shimbashi Soba, Kuishin Bo and Ichiban Boshi in their portfolio.
Ami Ami Great World City is a major part of the Shokutsu Ten Japanese Food Street in this location in the basement of GWC. The space was previously used by That CD Shop and Italian deli, Gastronomia.
A prominent Robatayaki and Tempura counter provides diners with a view of the action at the grill and tempura stove. Regular seating is available in the rest of the spacious restaurant.
Ami Ami Great World City Menu
Here are some pictures of the Ami Ami Great World City Menu. The ala carte menu was quite limited. We decided to try some of the set lunch options available.
The Nagekomi Don was featured as an opening promotion. Available as a set ($22.80) or as a single item ($19.80). We decided on the latter. The bowl of rice with bits of raw fish toppings was not very attractive in appearance. The taste of the dish was quite average. It was the least liked item of that day.
The tempura dishes were the highlight of the day. The Tempura Set ($25.80) came with a small chawanmushi and miso soup. The tempura items included a few prawns, fish and an assortment of vegetables. We thought that all of them were very good.
We had another tempura dish – Donburi set which cost $23.80. We paid another $3.8 to make it into a Hitsumabushi set, which came with instructions.
As before, the tempura items were very good. This dish comes with a tempura egg which we thought was quite unusual (in a good way). The Hitsumabushi option provided a flask of dash soup and some condiments – chopped spring onions and wasabi. This was added to the rice at the end.
Our last dish was the Pork Belly Sumibiyaki Don set ($22.80). Thinly slices of grilled marinated pork belly over a plate of rice. The slices looked somewhat like pieces of thickly sliced bacon. But the taste was better – more juicy and natural. The taste of this dish was not bad but there was a high proportion of fat.
Overall, the new Ami Ami Great World City was an interesting place for tempura fans. The quality of the tempura stood high above all the other dishes we tried that day. On our next visit, we will just focus on the tempura dishes. The best companion to go with the heaty deep-fried food is the Sapporo beer ($7.80 for mug) which was cold and fresh.
