Hjh Maimunah Restaurant is one of the best restaurants in Singapore for traditional Malay food. It has a clean comfortable dining area and a wide selection of dishes, one dish meals and a good range of colourful and delectable kuehs. It is hard not to have a feast when you are at Hjh Maimunah Restaurant.
Hjh Maimunah Restaurant has an outlet at Jalan Pisang and another in Joo Chiat. It is easy to locate Hjh Maimunah Restaurant at Jalan Pisang. It occupies a few shop houses and has a large wall mural on the corner shop house.
Dining Hall & Event Venue
On the ground floor of two of the shophouses are where you order and pay for the food. The dining area is on the ground floor of a third shop house and there is also a large dining hall on level 2.
The upper level can serve as an event space. The hall which comes with a small decorated stage can easily be transformed into a nice wedding venue. On a normal weekdays, the upper level is a pleasant comfortable dining hall for the lunch time crowd.
Menu of Hjh Maimunah Restaurant
Hjh Maimunah Restaurant offers traditional Malay cuisine. You will not find rainbow ketupats or other hipster fusion dishes there. However, it does not mean that the restaurant is out of sync with the times – it has its menu on digital screens. The items on the menu are extensive – grilled chicken, siput, kentang belado, barbecued fish, sambal goreng, beef rendang, mee bakso and gado-gado are among the items on the menu.
But you don’t really need a menu as the tempting dishes are on display and you just have to point to whatever takes your fancy.
Traditional Malay Kampong Food
We went to Hjh Maimunah at Jalan Pisang for lunch and ordered a variety of dishes -including tahu telor, beef rendang, assam fish, fried fish and vegetables. The prices are very reasonable. Beef Rendang was $3 a piece, fish was $2.50 a piece and vegetables $2 to $4 a dish.
All the items we tried were good. The food was of good quality and delicious. Prices are lower than those typically charged by nasi padang stalls in food courts.
Malay Kuehs or Kuihs
It is hard to resist the temptation of the colourful kuehs. We ordered a variety ($0.80 per piece) to enjoy with teh tarik.
We did not find out all the names of the different kuehs but they were all very enjoyable. We decided to forget about counting calories and ordered a second round of kuehs.
Hjh Maimunah Restaurant seems to be very busy, especially during lunch hours, and it is easy to understand why. It has a nice comfortable dining space. It has a wide variety of traditional Malay and Indonesian dishes. The food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. Be prepared to have a feast if you are visiting Hjh Maimunah Restaurant.
