Strictly Pancakes at Prinsep Street (Closed)

Strictly Pancakes at Prinsep Street is one of the best places in Singapore if you like fluffy pancakes. As its name suggests, it is a dedicated pancake cafe. The star of the show is pancake – everything else in the cafe is really just to help you enjoy the pancakes.

Strictly Pancakes at Prinsep Street

Strictly Pancakes at Prinsep Street occupies a small 2 storey shophouse facing Selegie Road. Its neighbours include a number of pubs and bars, so the area could have a rowdy crowd on some evenings. In the day the place is quiet.

The shop space is small and narrow. The cashier’s counter and kitchen are on the ground floor. There are a few  tables squeezed between the counter and the kitchen. It is not the most pleasant dining space. The dining hall upstairs is nicer – it is cosy and has a certain homely charm. The tables there are fairly well spaced out.

Simple Pancakes Menu

The menu of Simply Pancakes is fairly straightforward – there are savoury pancake dishes, pancakes with sweet toppings and you can also design your own combination.

The prices of their beverages are reasonable. There is currently a student meal promotion which seems like a good deal.

Savoury Pancakes

Strictly Pancakes

We ordered a Cappuccino ($4.50) and tried a savoury meal, Chicken a la King ($16), and a customised Short Stack with Corn Beef Hash ($8). We also ordered the sweet Banana Scotched Pancakes ($12).

The coffee was served quite quickly and a bottle of plain water was left at the table. It was quite a good start. The wait for the pancakes was quite long, probably more than 20 minutes.

Strictly Pancakes Chicken

Both the Chicken a la King and customised Short Stack with Corn Beef Hash were served with butter and maple syrup on the side. The dishes did not look too exciting. The chicken and the corn beef were fine but not special. The pancakes were good though. They were soft and fluffy –  not dry and not dense or floury. The tender inside had an almost custard like texture. We found that we enjoyed eating the pancakes with just the butter and maple syrup more than with the savoury chicken and corn beef.

Sweet Pancakes

Strictly Pancakes Banana

We like pancakes, bananas and ice cream – so the sweet Banana Scotched Pancake was perfect for us. The dessert dish was very enjoyable. We regretted having the stack of 2 pancakes only instead of the regular three.

Overall, we had mixed sentiments about Strictly Pancakes at Prinsep Street. The service level could do with some improvement and the wait for pancakes was a bit longer than we would usually expect. The seating area on the ground floor was cramped and not very pleasant for a leisurely meal.  However, their pancakes are very good and enjoyable, especially the sweet ones. The prices are reasonable. Our next visit to Strictly Pancakes will be for sweet pancakes and coffee, and we must ask for a table on the second floor.
