Kuro Izakaya, Suntec City Singapore

Kuro Izakaya is a relatively new Japanese restaurant at Suntec City. It opened in the East Wing of the Suntec shopping mall in early 2017. According to their website, it is a “modish izakaya by night, KURO Izakaya transmutes into a laid-back Ramen Donburi shop by day offering popular go to Japanese comfort food at an affordable price.”  Kuro is located near the Lift lobby of Tower 3. It is outward facing which makes it easy to spot from the Fountain of Wealth outside but quite inconspicuous from the inside of the mall.

Kuro Izakaya is a small cozy place. An amply stocked bar showed off the whisky collection in store. The wood-panelled internal space has a warm atmosphere. There are some outdoor tables.

Kuro Izakaya Menu

The Kuro Izakaya menu is contained in electronic form, accessed with an iPad. Which is a good thing as there are pictures of everything and visibility remains good even when the lights dim.  Grilled items, kushiyaki, was the most interesting section of the extensive menu.  At lunch time, there some rice and noodle lunch set items which cost around $20 each. They sweeten the deal with a 50% discount off the second lunch set.   Accordingly we ordered two set lunches and a variety of other dishes.

A visit to an izakaya would not be complete without a beer or some sake.  We tried the Kirin beer in the regular as well as the frozen version ($5 each). The latter looked interesting with a topping of frozen froth, but the taste of both was essentially the same.

Our lunch sets were the Kuro Pork Ramen ($18) and Australian beef don ($20). The lower cost item enjoyed the 50% discount. Each set came with a salad and a mochi dessert. Both dishes were good but not exceptional. The beef don is especially suitable for those with a big appetite as the portion was substantial.

We had a lot of grilled skewer dishes. There was a mix up of orders resulting in us getting tomatoes that we did not order and an excess of grilled eggplants. The restaurant made a nice gesture of waiving all charges for these vegetable items.

The chicken and leek skewers ($4 each) were good. The pieces of meat were thick and remained juicy. The chicken breast skewers ($3 each) were dry and not as good. The enoki mushroom wrapped with bacon skewers ($3 each) were greasy and probably contained too many calories but had nice taste and crunch.

The grilled shishamo dish was beautifully presented but the fish were a bit small and dry. The chicken gyoza ($8) in contrast was nicely crisp outside and juicy inside.

It was raining on the day that we had lunch at Kuro Izakaya at Suntec City. It was quiet at lunch but we can imagine that it will be a popular place in the evening when the folks working upstairs congregate for happy hours.
