Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry is a small Japanese restaurant in Millenia Walk. It is located at the start of the Nihon Food Street on level 2. According to the website, “Tengawa is the first and only restaurant in Singapore to specialise in Japanese white curry.” This, we have to try.
Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry restaurant is not a flashy or ostentatious place. Neat and practical are words that come to mind; which, in a strange way, made it feel like an authentic restaurant in Japan. No, not one of those that win restaurant awards or Instagram followers. It is one of those restaurants that office workers flock to after work for a reliably good quick meal and a beer. It will not look out-of-place if it was placed along one of the alleys behind the Shimbashi Station in Tokyo.
Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry Menu
The Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry menu is easy to navigate. There are only a few set meals and ala carte dishes which are well illustrated with big photos. We tried three set meals and an ala carte item.
A cup of truffle flavoured chawanmushi is served with each set meal. The steamed egg was smooth and tasty. We are not proponents of adding truffles flavour to everything. This chawanmushi was good and would have been as enjoyable without the extra flavour. Fortunately, in this case, the added taste was not overpowering and actually combined well with the egg taste.
The chicken katsu ($8) was our ala carte order. It was well received by everyone. The portion was substantial and the crust was really crunchy. A dish of sweet sauce dip was provided. Some of us preferred it dipped into the white curry that was provided with the other items.
The seafood white curry udon ($16.80) was a dish that stood out in the menu because it was not a rice dish and it did not have any fried items. It came with the white curry on the side. Diners can eat it with its own plain broth or with the curry. We recommend eating it with the curry. The seafood content was high – two giant prawns, a few scallops and lots of clams. But the quality of the seafood was not high enough to carry the dish with a simple clean seafood taste.
The other two set meals were Premium Ebi ($16.80) and Juicy Hamburg ($15.80). They were beautifully presented. Both of these were very good and we will probably order these two again if we make a return visit. How was the white curry – the main attraction of Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry restaurant? We were surprised to find that the white curry tasted very similar to normal curry. By that we meant Asian curry, not the usual sweetish Japanese curry. The white curry was mildly spicy with a bit of peppery taste. We all liked it.
Overall, our lunch at Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry was an interesting experience. Eating white curry for the first time and trying out a new restaurant. The rice served had a nice chewy texture. There was a free flow of rice, clear soup and pickles with each set. The staff kindly offered us refills. But bearing in mind the national health challenges highlighted recently by the PM, we politely declined.
