Brawn & Brains Coffee

The former Singapore Badminton Hall is now a mixed-use venue. It houses a yoga studio, a rock climbing and gymnasium facility. The only thing that was of interest to us was the cafe on the ground floor – Brawn & Brains Coffee. It takes up the best location directly facing the main entrance on Guillemard Road, near Geylang.

The plain exterior hides a modern looking cafe. Brawn & Brains Coffee was packed when we were there on a weekend. It has a long bar counter looking out and some communal dining tables with small stools. The cafe does not take reservations and we just had to stand in line until some space at any table shows up. With these conditions, the atmosphere in the cafe was messy.  We prefer a more leisurely pace for our weekend brunch. Fortunately, there were understanding fellow diners that day who made space for us so that we could sit together.

The Brawn & Brains drinks menu is longer than the food menu. The weekend food menu contains only five items with possible variations for additional toppings. We decided to have items 2, 3 and 5.

Item 5, curried chicken wrap ($12.50) was the first to arrive.  It looked quite attractive and the taste was good. The curry was prominent enough to be noticed but not overpowering. Curry and cheese might sound like a strange combination, but the overall packed worked very well.  We would be happy to eat this again.

The beef pastrami sandwich with added cheese ($13.90 + 2.50) was the next to arrive. A plainer looking dish but it was also enjoyable. The added cheese added more complexity to the dish. It was a heavy dish as the portion was quite large. It can be shared by two people with small appetites.

The open face toast with slow cooked egg and grilled bacon looks like a heavy dish but it was quite manageable. Half of the large plate was taken up by the vegetable and chopped apple salad and peas. The toast itself was not very big. The bacon had a good smokey burnt flavour. This was probably the best item of the day.

Brawn & Brains Brunch

We selected some pastries to go with the coffee.  I can’t remember what they were but they were quite average. The best coffee was the Single Origin cappuccino ($5). The chilled bottled coffee was too diluted for our liking, tasting more like coffee flavoured milk.
