Taiwan has been voted as the top culinary destination in the world (and if you must know, Singapore is not even listed among the top ten list of CNN Travel). Singaporeans can hop on a plane to Taipei to experience the feted Taiwanese food or take a slow bum boat to Clark Quay to savour an extensive selection of authentic Taiwanese dishes at Shin Yeh Taiwanese Restaurant in Liang Court.
Shin Yeh Taiwanese Restaurant in Liang Court is a joint-venture between TungLok Group and Taiwan’s Shin Yeh Group, which traces its history to a shop in Taipei’s back alley serving Taiwanese home-cooked fare. Shin Yeh Restaurant in Liang Court is big with seating for 300 and has six well appointed private rooms. Those seated at the back of the restaurant get a view of Clark Quay and Singapore River.

To ensure a true Taiwanese experience, Shin Yeh Taiwanese Restaurant has a Taiwanese team of managers and head chefs. The menu is extensive and includes items representing Taiwan’s rich culinary heritage covering street snacks, traditional home-cooked food as well as fine dishes created to demonstrate the culinary skills and authentic flavours of Taiwan. Shin Yeh Taiwanese Dinner
We had dinner recently at Shin Yeh Taiwanese Restaurant. We ordered a variety of dishes for a party of seven to go with plain steamed rice ($2 per bowl) and Taiwanese Sweet Potato Porridge($2 per person with unlimited re-fill). Generally, the dishes were well presented and tasty.
The in vogue salted egg yolk fish skin ($14 for a medium portion) went well with the porridge. It was not as crispy as we had expected it to be but still quite enjoyable.
The Shin Yeh Cold Dish Platter ($72 for medium) looked like what would be served during Chinese wedding dinners. The platter comprised Sliced Pork Rolls, ‘Kampung’ Chicken, Marinated Jellyfish and Roast Mullet Fish Roe. There was nothing particularly Taiwanese nor outstanding about the dish.
We were not sure if the Wasabi Prawns dish ($36) was really part of Taiwanese heritage cuisine but it was very good. The prawns were fresh and succulent and the wasabi sauce was light and did not overwhelm.
The Claypot Chicken with Basil Leaves ($24) or “three-cup chicken (三杯鸡)” was definitely a Taiwanese classic dish. The combination of rice wine, basil and chilly gave the chicken dish a nice aroma and exciting flavours.
The Fried Beef with Ginger ($30) and the Braised Eggplant in Claypot ($21) were the favourite dishes of the night. They were well prepared and delicious.
We also ordered 2 quintessential Taiwanese dishes – Lion’s Head Minced Pork 狮子头 ($12) and Braised Pork with Rice (Lu Rou Fan 滷肉饭 ) ($10). The Lion’s Head was quite ordinary though it went well with porridge. The Braised Pork with Rice was excellent and we would order it again.
On the whole, there were hits and misses. However, our dinner at Shin Yeh Taiwanese Restaurant in Liang Court might be a fair representation of eating in Taiwan – there would be some forgettable stuff, some decent dishes and some really delicious and enjoyable food.
