SingPost Centre Hawkerman

The new mall of the Singapore Post Centre (or SingPost Centre) opened without much fanfare but its initial footfall numbers must be the envy of many other mall operators. A reason SingPost Centre is drawing the crowd must be the food offerings. There is  a mix of established restaurants and new to market brands. Hawkerman at SingPost Centre in one of the new dining concepts attracting curios diners.

According to the article on Today, Hawkerman is opened by actor-host Ben Yeo and “is about keeping the good old taste of hawker food alive”.  Located in the basement of Singpost Centre, Hawkerman is like a trendy food court where you can get the Fried & BBQ Chicken of Tenderfresh, the Hokkien Mee fried with prawn broth of Warong Kim’s (originally called Kim’s Fried Hokkien Mee) and the Hokkien spring rolls of Ah Boy’s Popiah (a spin-off of Good Chance Popiah).

At Hawkerman, the greeter will show you to the table and give you the menu. When you are ready to place your order you go up to the cashier to order and pay. You collect your food from the collection point when your buzzer gives you the indication.

The menu of Hawkerman offers a variety of spring chicken, Hokkien mee and popiah and interesting combinations of the 3 main items. In typical Singaporean style, there is a Bao Ka Liao sharing platter which will feature 7 items, including Tenderfresh Fried Chicken, Warong Kim’s Hokkien Mee, Ah Boy’s Hokkien Popiah, XO Carrot Cake and a dessert. Lor Mee & Popiah

We ordered a Hawkerman Seafood Lor Mee ($9.90) and Crispy Skin Chicken Chop Hokkien Popiah ($6.90). We also had a cup of cappuccino ($2.90). GST is included in the price shown on the menu and there is no service charge.

Hawkerman Noodles and Popiah

The  Seafood Lor Mee was like a wet style Hokkien mee. There were many ingredients such as la la, bean curd skins and prawns. The noodles had a nice texture and the prawn broth was tasty. It was not like the typical lor mee we would find in food centres. Think of it as wet Hokkien mee and it would be enjoyable.

The crossover popiah was a typical Hokkien popiah with the added bonus of thin pieces of chicken with crispy skin.  It was served with potatoes fries topped with mayonnaise.  The popiah had thin skin and lots of ingredients, including beansprouts, lettuce and chopped peanuts. The vegetables in the filling were simmered till they were really soft, with the peanuts and the crispy chicken providing some crunchiness. It was an interesting and tasty dish.

The Hawkerman at SingPost Centre has an interesting menu and the food we tried was not bad. The idea of getting various versions and combinations of Hokkien mee, popiah and spring chicken in a pleasant setting is quite appealing. We will be returning to Hawkerman to try other items on their menu – like the Lolek Hokkien Mee, and the Hokkien Chick sounds tempting too.
