A recent article in the Straits Times “New hawker centre in Pasir Ris to have modern hipster stalls alongside traditional ones“ (ST 6 Sep 2017) reported that Singapore’s latest food court combines traditional and modern cuisine to attract a new generation of hawkers and also to provide a social place for people to gather. The lines between, hawker centre, food court and restaurants are getting blurred at these hip and cool dining places. As of now, here are some other hipster food courts in Singapore that might fit this description.
Apart from the lower prices as compared with conventional restaurants, the strong attraction of food courts is the diversity of cuisines from different food vendors. Different people from the same group can choose their own preference and eat at the same table. These hipster food courts in Singapore have this advantage. They also provide a nicer environment that is more restaurant-like. The trade-off is that food in these trendy places (which are usually but not always air-conditioned) may cost more than the pure hawker or food court places.

PasarBella Suntec City is a food hall with a riot of colours and flavours. PasarBella says that its Suntec City outlet is inspired by the Lower East Side of New York City. There are street art and interesting “graffiti” on the walls but what really attracted us was the wide variety of food – from chilli crabs to poke bowls and Korean Fried Chicken. It is best described as a contemporary food hall, where the old way of buying and eating from different independent restaurants under one roof has become trendy again. At Wild Market, besides a full bar, there are stalls offering a varied selection of food from Japanese ramen to French cuisine as well as Penang food and Ceylonese fare.
