Zai Shun Curry Fish Head Curry 载顺咖喱鱼头 in Jurong East received official recognition of their culinary prowess when they were listed as a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant in the 2017 Singapore Michelin Guide. But fans of high quality steamed fish have known this restaurant for years. It is located at the western part of Singapore – in Jurong East, near Yuhua Food Village. Zai Shun opens from 7 am in the morning and there is usually a full house at lunchtime.
Zai Shun Curry Fish Head Curry occupies an entire coffee shop. The open display of pre-cooked food facilitates selection of your desired dishes to be done economy rice style – just point and order. The more interesting part of Zai Shun is the counter at the side. That is where the fresh catch of the day are kept and some are displayed. The steamed fish items are what draws many regular patrons to Zai Shun. The steamed pomfret done Teochew style seemed like a top seller. Other types of fresh fish are stored in the styrofoam ice boxes. The staff are on hand to provide information on what is available and to provide a peek into the boxes.
Here are pictures of some dishes from a couple of our visits to Zai Shun Curry Fish Head Curry. Like many of the patrons there, we did not try the fish head that they are famous for. The steamed fish dishes are our main event. The large pomfret steamed Teochew style costs $55 and can be shared by two persons without ordering any other items. It is fresh and steamed to perfection. It is the item that keeps us going back to Zai Shun.
We tried this other fish which was on display. We were told that it was a “白鱼”. I am not sure what is its proper name. The ‘white fish’ was steamed Cantonese style. It costs $23. It was a nice meaty fish, but the flesh not as smooth and sweet as a pomfret.
Some other dishes that are popular at Zai Shun are the fried bitter gourd and fish cakes. Many of the items look like what you will find at a Teochew porridge stall. I have yet to try the grey mullets which look enticing. Some day we will also get around to tasting the fish head curry.
Zai Shun’s opening hours are 7 am to 3 pm. They are closed on Wednesdays.
