Densely populated Singapore is fortunately also a city with many accessible parks and gardens. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is one of the largest urban parks in central Singapore. The park has a meandering river with lush banks of vegetation and is so attractive that it has become home to a family of wild otters. Besides strolls, picnics and otter spotting, Canopy Garden Dining & Bar is another reason to visit Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.
Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park stretches from Bishan Road to Upper Thomson Road, right up to Lower Pierce Reservoir Park. Canopy Garden Dining & Bar is in the part of the park between Bishan Road and Marymount Road, near the car park entrance along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 (just after Ang Mo Kio Stree 32).
Canopy Garden Dining is a beautifully designed restaurant with a canopy roof and full height windows which allow a good dose of natural light in and a great view of the surrounding lush greenery. It has an alfresco dining area that integrates into the park space, providing patrons with an authentic dine in the garden experience.
It has a nice relaxed atmosphere and is suitable whether you are eating alone or with the family or a large group of friends. Animal friends are also welcome.
Canopy Garden Dining Menu
Canopy Garden Dining opens early, as early as 8 am on weekends, and stays open till late in the evening. It essentially serves Western brunch and dinner items – such eggs, pastas and burgers from morning to late afternoon; and soup, pizzas, fish, chicken and steaks for dinner. Below are photos of the brunch menu.
Brunch in the Park
We visited Canopy Garden Dining on a cold morning. The temperature and the scenic surrounding made it easy for us to imagine that we were in a foreign temperate land. We ordered Eggs Benedict ($17), Espanol Bomba Rice ($22) and Hot Coffee ($4) and pretended that we were having brunch on a spring day in Jane Austen countryside.
The poached eggs & honey baked ham on toasted English muffins with Hollandaise sauce were served with sautéed mushrooms & salad. It was not a particularly remarkable dish of Eggs Benedict but it felt right and was enjoyable.
The Espanol Bomba Rice was an interesting dish. Squid ink rice, topped with fried egg & mentaiko mayo, was served with crispy fried chicken. The short grain rice was not sticky and had a nice consistency and taste. We would have been happy just to have the rice with the egg and slightly spicy mentaiko mayo. The delicious fried chicken thigh was a bonus.
Sweet Date Pudding
Feeling cold can make us feel hungry. Although the Eggs Benedict and Bomba Rice were quite substantial, we decided to have Canopy’s Sticky Date Pudding ($14). There was no regret. The pudding, with a high content of dates, was served with gula Melaka butterscotch & vanilla ice cream. It was lush, moist and sweet – really delicious and gratifying.
Canopy Garden Dining serves good food in a relaxed space in a tranquil park. It is great for a good time with family and friends or for some alone time when you want to contemplate life. It can also be an enchanting venue for a romantic date – just bear in mind this line from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice: “A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.”
