Lunch and Happy Hour at Kanpai Izakaya Holland Village

A happy hour that lasts the whole day makes it a happy day.  The happy hour at Kanpai Izakaya lasts till 10.30pm everyday. Kanpai Izakaya is a new Japanese restaurant at Holland Village. They are at the Lorong Mambong stretch of shophouses. Holland Village has two personalities – sleepy in the day and upbeat at night. There are good reasons to visit Kanpai during off-peak hours and one good reason is the package of enticing promotions and discounts.

The decor of Kanpai Izakaya is basic and industrial. We think it will look more attractive in the night. It was a quiet day when we visited. Just two other tables apart from ourselves. The restaurant has a split level layout with the kitchen located on the higher level. The izakaya style of dining means that each table tends to order multiple small dishes. The poor server had to make many trips up and down. To her credit, she single-handedly ran the place by herself, with a smile and most efficiently.

Kanpai Izakaya Promotions

Here is a screen shot of the food and drinks promotion at Kanpai Izakaya. At lunch time, all food items get a 30% discount. In the evenings, different promotions apply for different days. As promotional deals often change, we recommend that you check with the restaurant for the latest up to date information.

Kanpai Izakaya Menu

Here are pictures of some pages from the Kanpai Izakaya Menu. As you can see the list of food items was extensive. We selected assorted items from the list.

We started with some simmered sardines ($8) – Note : for this post, all prices indicated are menu prices before the 30% discount). They were large and the skin looked like mackerel but our server assured us they were sardines. Anyway, they tasted great and is the kind of dish to go with drinks.

Asahi super dry beer – $16 for two of these beauties. A sight for sore eyes on a hot Singapore afternoon.

The garlic fried rice tasted like something they serve at the end of a teppanyaki meal. At $5 this was a generous and tasty portion of fried rice.

Grilled food goes well with cold beer. We had the capelin ($5) and chicken mid-joint wings ($4.80). We tried some eel maki ($10). All these were good but not really exceptional. But they exceeded our expectations for food at these kind of prices.

Finally, we had a grilled salmon fish head ($18 for half a head). The fish tasted very good, but it was quite small and the meat content was low.

Overall, Kanpai Izakaya was a no frills place serving the easy going casual food that we associate with dining at an izakaya. The food was not gourmet quality but was well made for the intended purpose – to go with the reasonably priced drinks.  Even without the discounts, prices were fair. The 30% discount makes it an even more enjoyable place.
