Brunch at Kampong Glam cafe, Maison Ikkoku The Gallery

Maison Ikkoku is a cafe in the Kampong Glam area, near Arab Street and Bussorah Street. It has undergone quite a transformation since our last visit in 2015 (you can read about our previous visit here). It is now known as Maison Ikkoku The Gallery. There is also a bar on the second level and a rooftop space known as Maison Ikkoku Rooftop, which we believe opens in the evenings.

Whereas the name change was slight, the change in the decor of the space at Maison Ikkoku the Gallery had been substantial. The once bright, white-walled space is now taken over by a dark space with distressed finishes. Paintings line the walls, which may be the reason it is now also referred to as The Gallery. It is matter of subjective taste, but we prefer the old look, although it must be said that the new look definitely has more character.

Maison Ikkoku The Gallery Menu

Here are pictures of some pages from the Maison Ikkoku The Gallery Menu as well as the Art of Mixology list. We ordered some coffee and a few food items.

For starters, we tried the Alibaba ($15), fried chicken seasoned with lemon, curry, turmeric and other spices. The portion was small but the taste of each nugget of chicken was intense and delicious.

We also tried the lobster pasta ($35) which was also a small portion and neatly presented. It was flambéed for a brief moment.  We had high expectations of this dish but were disappointed with the sweetish sauce that was prepared for this pasta. The sweetness dominated the taste of the seafood and the other ingredients described in the menu.

We had a better experience with the cod fish burger ($25). It was a conventional looking burger. We could taste the cod and the rest of the ingredients.

The most enjoyable part of our meal was the dessert and coffee. The coffee here at Maison Ikkoku The Gallery is as good as we remembered it to be from our previous visit, but they are quite pricey ($7 for cappuccino and $6.5 for black Americano). Our dessert was Kyoto matcha tart ($15). These little egg custard tarts were freshly backed and tasted very good.
