New Teck Kee Chicken Rice – local food in Bukit Timah

Looking for a nice simple place for a meal of Singapore? If local dishes like laksa and zi char suits your taste, then the New Teck Kee Chicken Rice restaurant in Rail Mall might be your kind of place. Chicken rice is their speciality but the restaurant serves a wider range of food than its name suggests. From basic zi char favourites like stir fry vegetables, shrimp rolls to Thai chicken feet. Free parking provides an added incentive to visit.

The decor at New Teck Kee Chicken Rice at Rail Mall is neat and unostentatious. It is air-conditioned and if you are lucky, you can get a parking spot right outside. If you are not driving, the Hillview MRT station is a five minute walk away and linked by a covered walkway.  With this new Downtown line station, it is easy to find local food in Bukit Timah.  In addition to Teck Kee, there are other shops as well.

Here are pictures of the menu at New Teck Kee Chicken Rice. The range of zi char dishes is not as extensive as a regular zi char stall but we think it is adequate for a simple meal.

As we have tried their chicken rice before (you can read about it here), we decided to skip the chicken rice. We selected a few dishes – roast chicken ($5.50), laksa ($5.50) and Chinese spinach vermicelli soup ($8).

The chicken was moist and smooth. Better if eaten with their chicken rice, but also good on its own.

The laksa has a creamy, balanced taste in the sense that all the different spices and herbs are well blended. It is mildly spicy which is a good thing for us.

The spinach vermicelli soup had a home-cooked feel about it. The soup was flavoured by the spinach and ikan bills. A nice soupy dish to have for lunch. It is a dish we will have if recovering from illness. Patients visiting the Rail Mall clinic a few doors away may find this a soothing dish to have for lunch after seeing the doctor.

Overall, New Teck Kee is a convenient place for simple but well prepared local food in Bukit Timah if you are in the area.
