Rosso Bianco Singapore – New Italian Restaurant at Greenwood Ave (Renamed Roots Mediterranean)

A new restaurant has opened at the dining cluster along Greenwood Avenue in the well-heeled residential area of Singapore, Watten Estate. Rosso Bianco Italian Restaurant takes over the space previously occupied by another Italian restaurant, Donna Carmela. We dropped in to see if there is any change to the things that matter – the food and the dining experience at this new Italian restaurant in Bukit Timah.

Once inside, we noticed that there are some positive changes. While the decor of the new Rosso Bianco is still that of a traditional Italian restaurant. It has been refreshed and is less rustic. The best single improvement is the introduction of crisp white table linen.  You can compare this picture with the previous look at our post on Donna Carmela.

Rosso Bianco Menu

There is an extensive menu at Rosso Bianco. It contains most of the items we are used to seeing in an Italian restaurant. Here are some portions of the menu which we have taken from the Chope website, which contains the full menu. The $25 set lunch looks interesting. We were there for dinner and ordered three items from the a la carte menu.

Verdure alla Griglia ($15.80) was a nice salad of grilled asparagus, eggplant, capsicum, artichoke & olives. It was a refreshing start to the meal.

The Melanzane alla Parmigiana ($ 18.80) – baked eggplant layered with Parmigiana cheese was essentially lasagna without the meat. It was a good dish but we think we would go for lasagna the next time as we missed the weight of the meat in this dish.

The tagliatella with truffle cream sauce ($19.80) was the best dish of the evening. This pasta looks like the Italian version of local mee pok. Its texture was good and chewy. The sauce was nicely flavoured and not heavy. It was an item from the Special Menu of the Week at Rosso Bianco.

Wine drinkers will be happy to note that Tuesdays are no-corkage fee days at Rosso Bianco. We had brought along our bottle of 2008 Ch Pichon Baron on a day that was not a Tuesday. The manager was flexible and did not charge as the corkage fee. Apart from this nice gesture, overall service was also good, e.g. messy plates were changed without request.
