It was hard to figure out what to make of a new restaurant that recently opened at Westgate Mall in Jurong East. The name of the restaurant is “NY Night Market”. There are large Korean words on the signboard with a picture of a yellow cab which New York City is famous for. The interior was dim, we could not make out what was inside. We stepped in to find out.
The Westgate mall is a bright modern place. The interior of NY Night Market Westgate was done up in a distressed, industrial style. Some may like this type of look just as some prefer extremely distressed jeans as compared to a new one. Probably as a sign of our age, such decor does not really appeal to us. But we do concede that the NY Night Market Westgate looks distinctive and full of character.
NY Night Market Westgate Menu
The bright glossy menu was a contrast with the gloomy interior. The cuisine is what we would loosely describe as Western casual food such as pizza and nachos. Some items obviously were created with Korean influence, such as the “Pasta de Dak Galbi”. Here are pictures of some portions of the menu. The full menu has many more choices.
We ordered the 50 cm baguette ($13.90) because it looks quite dramatic in the menu. Unfortunately it was cut in half when it was served to us. With thinly sliced beef, onion salsa, jalapeños and other things on the baguette it has a Tex Mex kind of taste. The taste was quite good.
The other dish that we tried was Rosti and Beef ($10.90). Sliced beef and onions were served on a thin bed of rosti. The whole thing was topped up with a dollop of sour cream. The potato at the bottom was drenched with the amount of oil from the beef and other items on top. It was an overly oily, heavy dish. Fortunately it was not a large portion.
No tap water was served at NY Night Market Westgate. Bottled water ($0.50) was on the menu.
